It's still a quad core CPU. I mean it's up to you. I think they still preform pretty well.

Upgrade to AMD, you'll find it cheaper.

If it is no longer performing the way you want it to, then yes, it's time to upgrade.  If you're just web browsing and stuff, then no, don't upgrade.

Just overclock it. The Q9550 should be able to reach 4GHz with a 212 Evo. Games aren't using more than 4 cores right now anyways. A CPU upgrade would be a waste of money unless you are using it for professional work.

depends on what you've been doing lately. if you're started doing some cpu intensive tasks, then it might need to be, but 6 years is a lot, i mean a lot! so if i were you i'd seriously think about upgrading, weather its working or not. ^_^

The IPC on those old core 2 chips isn't that good compared to modern CPU's, even AMD cpu's have much better IPC nowadays so if you find your CPU to be the bottleneck in games for example then it can be totaly justified to upgrade it to something more modern with a better performance like a core i5, core i7 of FX piledriver CPU for example...i had a Q6600 at 3.6ghz paired with a radeon HD7950 and i thought it was doing fine but when i upgraded it to an FX 8 core chip i realised that the GPU was only looking for more...the performance where much better...so much that i decided to get an high-end GPU to go along and now it's just plain EPIC.

I still rock a phenom II x4 @ 4Ghz, and it runs my 7870XT just fine.

IMHO, I think you're fine, you got a quad core, the IPC is acceptable, and you're capable of overclocking it.

so it's up to you really, if you have the money free to spend, you can.

Yeah that is not a bad cpu at all I have one just like it and it worked well for me until I upgraded my MOBO and RAM so I just got a i5. Otherwise I would have kept it.

Review from somebody going from a Q6600 to an i7 4770k, should give you a basic idea, obviously the 9550 was faster but not by that much
