Painting a Motherboard

NerdNinja

How would I go about painting a motherboard? I plan on making a black/blue themed build now that the specialised H440's are coming out and I can't find a blue accented mobo with the features I want. I'm not planning on painting the ENTIRE PCB but rather the PCI slots and the heatsinks.-Please Focus on this

Also while I'm here I might as well ask a few questions.

1. Should I wait to buy a Z97 board? I'm planning on getting an i7 4770K. -Answered

2. One of the features I want is MSI's lag killer ethernet. Is it worth it though? For a person who as 3 meg/s internet would I notice a difference? -Not answered

Thanks!

The year is 20XX. Everyone plays Fox at TAS levels of perfection. Because of this, the winner of a match depends solely on port priority. The RPS metagame has evolved to ridiculous levels due to it being the only remaining factor to decide matches.

Only Abate, Axe, and Wobbles can save us.

I'd wait for Z97.

I was thinking of that myself. Mainly because of SATA express.

Easier yes. But a little too pricey.

Painting the pcie slots might prove too challenging. You have to mask off the insides which can be a huge pain.

Heatsinks can be easily removed and spray painted, they will not cool as well but the difference should be minor enough it won't be an issue, just do very light coats. PCIe slots are a little more difficult... you could brush on paint, but it isn't going to look very good. If you REALLY wanted to paint them, you could mask off around the slots, spray paint them, then keep reinserting a GPU into the slots to clean out the excess paint that covered the contacts. Paint is non-conductive so if you don't get it cleaned out good enough the worst it will do is just not work... clean it out a bit better and you are good to go.

Thanks! What kind of paint do you think I should use? Maybe Plastidip the slots and then just regular spray paint for the heatsinks?

you don't mask off the inside you scrap the paint off by taking a card in and out

i'd rather not do it. Possibility of damaging something in the process...

as long as your not using your gpu to do it, not that big of a risk

I'll just answer number 2. I 3MBit internet. I have gigabit ethernet, so I don't feel it. It's not worth it.

Just did a quick search for you, we have had a similar topic on the forums. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/36134-how-to-paint-your-motherboard/ @Vitalius

This.

I really like this idea with plasti-dip. Just only do it if you don't have a problem with Thermals as it is.

quite a few people have done it

go to the link cart dog posted.

just because a few have been successful doesn't mean it won't cause damage..

it's really not that difficult to mask it off.

If you don't want to spend 5-10 mins to protect your 100~ mobo then I have nothing to say any more. carry on

OP, follow the link by cartdog. your answer is there
