Can we please stop abusing the word "phobic?" (In this case specifically, but also in all areas of debate) Nobody is afraid of them, they just don't think their use is appropriate. I'm very tired of this mischaracterization.

Given the definition of the word, it doesn't only apply to fear.

Yes, it does. Fear is central to its definition. From Merriam-Webster:

PHOBIA - an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation.

Sure, chatbot answers should be allowed if their tailored and guided to the users question.

I google and then copy relevant portions, but also I make sure to try to answer the INTENT of the question as well.

If someone is just checking with ChatGPT and then pasting the response... that's not what people want.

When I ask something, I want someone to understand what I am asking, understand what I am not asking, and understand what I don't know enough about to ask.

FYI, Phobias involve fear or dislike.  I don't see a fear or dislike here, I think it's more of a can we stop the thoughtless regurgitation of a generic and most times unhelpful bot answer.

I don't fear you, but I can honestly say your response was unnecessary and incorrect and I'd like it to not have happened.  Doesn't mean I have anything against you or fear or dislike you.  Just like bots, they can at times provide good answers, but that's not what this forum is for.  We're not just here to google stuff for you 🙂

Oxford is the only place I'm seeing that. The classical definition is fear, and fear alone. I can only guess the addition of "aversion" here is to placate errant users of the word in situations like this very thread, where people try to shoe-horn the word into places that are contextually inaccurate. Language should not change based on misusage.

I agree with you it's been bastardized, and I also do not like the way the suffix is (over) used in that way. But I will disagree that language should not change based on usage (or misusage). That's the nature of language, and although I won't always agree, I think it's the way it is, and it's ultimately fine.

Well,

Let's start.

The Etymology:

Quote

The word phobia comes from the Greek: φόβος (phóbos), meaning "aversion", "fear" or "morbid fear".

Sources of definition:

Quote

A phobia is an anxiety disorder defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation.

- Wikipedia

Quote

an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation

: exaggerated fear of

: intolerance or aversion for

- Merriam-Webster

Quote

a type of anxiety disorder (= a mental illness that makes someone very worried and affects their life) that involves an extreme fear of something:

an extreme fear or dislike of a particular thing or situation, especially one that is not reasonable:

- Cambridge

Quote
an intense, persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, situation, or person that manifests in physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, rapid heartbeat, or shortness of breath, and that motivates avoidance behavior.
an aversion toward, dislike of, or disrespect for a thing, idea, person, or group.

- Dictionary.com

Quote

a strong unreasonable fear of something

  • He has a phobia about flying.
  • One of the symptoms of the disease is water phobia.

- Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries

Quote

A phobia is a very strong irrational fear or hatred of something.

- Collins

My opinion - Phobia is is an irrational and excessive fear that can also be an anxiety disorder.

But some people perceive a very strong dislike as a very strong fear and call the very strong dislike a phobia, thus aversion and dislike appear in some dictionaries to reflect that.

The bottom line is that some people will perceive a very strong dislike as phobia and that's perfectly normal and acceptable.
