AMD latest drivers cockups

Just that Mario

Just me who is surprised how LTT or even this forum hasn't had much coverage on the massive cockups by AMD on the latest driver releases?

I'm not surprised, since I have no idea what you're talking about.

Don't assume everyone has their news feeds attuned to AMD or sits at their machine reading Reddit all day.

He probably means issues with hardware acceleration in browsers, discord etc combined with a multi-monitor setup that has two different resolutions and/or refresh rates. Nvidia also had this problem (not sure if it's related to Windows 11 only), but they fixed it. AMD also fixed most, if not all of the issues in their latest 22.11.2 driver.

It's weird because I pretty much didn't have any issues on my 6900 XT, but my friend with a 6800 XT had frequent driver timeouts in some situations. My friend's fix for his problems was reverting to an older driver for the time being.

EDIT: Apparently this was the fix for the issue:

However I have not tried it since I couldn't replicate the problem in the first place, so I can't confirm whether that's the root cause and whether the suggested solution actually works.

I

My guess is that the multi monitor issue is GPU or monitors specific. On my GTX 1070 i tried every single solution i could find across the net to make both my monitors work with different refresh rates, but to no success. As soon as i selected higher refresh rate than the one on my 1080p 75Hz panel for my 2nd monitor, both of them instantly go black and i have to unplug one of them and force restart with F13.

AMD subreddit is full of people having issues for past 6 months. Basically ever since their optimisations to drivers drivers have been crashing, apps and games stutter and crash. Add above mentioned issues to the list and the fact that Windows keeps overwriting AMD drivers despite driver updates turned off.

Personally I have 3D applications crash when they are in the background, drivers timeout multiple times a day, Windows overwrites drivers moment I try to use older stable version, etc. It wasn't this bad earlier, but after reinstall of the very same driver it has got a lot worse. Feels like someone told AMD devs that drivers have been pretty stable and they replied with "hold my beer".

Not sure what other people are talking about, But I can say for my setup I have not had any issues with my AMD drivers, but my EVGA NU audio Pro software is pretty broken since the recent Windows update

Never had any problem for 15 years with dual monitor setups either with Nvidia or AMD. I know some issues may occur if using adapters, different monitors, cable interfaces etc..

Is this related to the MPO thingy? Have you try turning MPO off?

Reverting to older drivers is the go-to solution with AMD.

I would do that, if god damn Windows 11 wouldn't revert back to "their" version in less than 24 hours. I have driver updates turned off, but either the UI is broken and every time you do a manual driver install the option resets or Windows 11 is just being an a-hole.

No clue. I don't really have flickering and stuttering. While some games do have issues loading in assets, bigger issue is that it randomly crashes because of issue with AMD drivers or entire driver just times out and then pretty much everything to do with visuals, specially 3D crash. I've found this issue to happen more when I have the game running in background. Ironically didn't have issues until AMD announced 22.2.12 as new "recommended" driver. I did a DDU and reinstall. Most screwed up is that that time the driver crashed mid install, so had to hard reset the PC. Absolutely ridiculous. After that I uninstalled driver again, rebooted, downloaded it again from AMD website, install worked fine, but now it keeps timing out randomly.

It has got really infuriating... I don't get it at all how the damn driver crashed mid install, that's some next gen. f*ckery...
