Used GPU Analysis

LockdownJimmy

I am looking to buy a used 2070 Super, but I'm a bit paranoid about it's condition.  I feel like the manufacturer seal over the screw has been tampered with.  Should I be concerned buying this card?

Looks like Vaseline on that card, might have been used for sub zero OC. I would look somewhere else. Any card that is not looking fully stock is suspicious. Also Way too clean for an old card like that. There should be some amount of dust.  Also there are EVGA stickers missing.

Can you post a link to the where the card is being offered?

What assurances are you getting as to the card's condition? Most sites have buyer protection and buyer-focused return policies that should cover you if the card releases its magic smoke within the first month or so.

Did you try asking the old owner about the card, its condition, prior use, and why the seals are apparently missing (and what those white blobs are)? It could be as innocent as them changing the thermal paste on their GPU. Personally, I would have cleaned such a card down before posting it up for sale anyway, so its condition doesn't in itself raise any alarm bells for me.

Ask them about these things. They might lie, but it's also very possible they'll be perfectly upfront about it. If anything these questions might enable you to haggle them down a bit.

Is it worth it? Depends on the price they're asking for, and how risk-averse you are.

It's a sale posting on r/hardwareswap.  I've bought a solid 1070ti and 5600X there before, but something about it feels off.
