Hey Guys,

So I got a good deal on a 3080 FTW Ultra and just installed it (Ryzen 2700, 1440p, 600W PSU, 16 GB DDR4 3000 MSI B550 Gaming Plus). When gaming I notice some strange behaviour; in God of War, for instance, in small rooms I get 100% GPU utilization and 120-140 FPS, but as soon as I roam spaces a little more vast, util. drops to 70% and so do the frames. The CPU always sits at 2-3%. In Metro Exodus, it gets even weirder, the GPU never even surpasses 50% util. and the game is unplayable at 30-35 fps.

Is my 2700 really bottlenecking the GPU so hard, especially for I am playing at 1440p?

Thanks for your input,

Archie

Yeah going in doors and it able to max out and then going into a wider area dropping is a sign. The 2700 is good but not great, especially for a 3080.

Games are more reliant on IPC these days than ever.

Also worth pointing out some games are just horrible in performance. World of warcraft I can range from 144 (v-sync) down to less than 30 in some areas because of the game engine.

CPU: Ryzen 5900x | GPU: RTX 3090 FE | MB: MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon | RAM: 32gb Ballistix | PSU: Corsair RM750 | Cooler: Sythe Fuma 2 | Case: Phanteks P600s | Storage: 2TB WD Black SN 750 & 1TB Sabrent Rocket | OS: Windows 11 Pro & Linux Mint

sounds about right and indicates your cpu is bottlenecking the gpu (unsurprisingly)

you need a 5600x or similar minimum for that card. (educated guess,  prob better off with a 5800x or something tbh)

yup Final Fantasy (number here) online is like that, goes from 160 to ~60 *especially* when there are lots of people (in a mmo, no less, who coulda seen it coming lol) terrible.  i don't play such games on principle... 🤢
