steam downloads and youtube

I have a 50mbps download speed and i am downloading games on steam at 7mbps. whenever I watch YouTube, it stutters and buffers at 1080p. shouldn't I have 43mbps more download if steam is only using 7mbps? or am I missing something.

i unno something is probably off with ur calculations, steam typically maxes out the bandwidth completely.  which is why u need to set a limit if you want to use the connection for anything else at the same time, typically. 

 

unless u did limit it and didn't mention it

Depends on many factors. Wifi of ethernet?

Is Steam downloading at 7 megabits (Mb) per second, or 7 megabytes (MB) per second? There are 8 bits in a byte, so downloading at 7 MB/sec is 56 Mb/sec (7 x 8).

50 Mbps = 6.25 MB/s  Or 6250 KB/s
Steam shows the download speed in MB/s not Mbps. That capital B makes all the difference between bit and Byte.
I don't blame you for thinking you had more leeway, it can be confusing when you don't know how Internet providers market their plans.

 

you can test your speed with https://fast.com , you should be getting 50Mbps or near that if you're not downloading anything. But once steam downloading, unless you restrict the download speed... Yeah it will use it all up.

I would suggest putting 4000 KB/s in that box there in your steam settings and enable "Limit bandwidth to".
Leaving you plenty of spare bandwidth to watch youtube.

Yup, pretty much downloading at your full speed there indeed.

The problem is with YouTube, for some unknown reason they're still using 56k Modems on their end and are using the money they get  to pay C-Suiters instead of upgrading their equipment.

yup... pretty sure u can change it in steam to show mbps though.  and yeah u probably want to limit the bandwidth a bit, like 2-3mb/s is needed for yt minimum depending on the resolution.

Nah bro, that's on your side. Blame your ISP, not youtube. No issues getting 112Mbps (out of 120Mbps) from youtube on a 4k stream up here (weird res due to it being an LMG video)
