Router CPU keeps hitting 100%

T0MMEN

Why does this keep happening? While my routers CPU core hits 100% i get a huge latency while i.e. pinging my router. Ive ordered a new asus router with 4 cores. And hopefully that wil solve the problem.

But my question is, does anyone know why this happens? We are only 2 people living in this apartment.

The router might be weak for your Internet access speeds and the devices you're using. Going with a stronger router is a good way to solve this.

the better question is, why did asus bother implementing resource monitoring on a device with 128MB memory.

my guess is that it only has so much routing capacity, and whatever speed you have is more than 'so much'.

This is me doing the same exact thing, on my old AC66u, it also has only 1 core but much faster, more ram, so whats up with asus making routers in 2022 that are worse than what they made like 8years ago?

It depends what you have enabled such as AIProtection, Parental Controls, QoS and some of the stuff in Advanced Settings.  Make sure you turn off anything you do not need.

I mean its definitely possible its CPU cores are individually weaker than the single one in your old router, its hard to tell without knowing the exact model and version of that model.

Also bare in mind that WiFi uses a lot more CPU power on the router than wired, so a WiFi client pushing a high speed can cause CPU spikes that will impact everything going through the router, including wired clients.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Do you have Guest WIFI on or Enabled VPN Client (VPN Fusion) on your router?

I dont know, i ended up RMA-ing the router. And bought the ASUS RT-AX53U for 50 bucks, that has 4cores and no more latency issue.
