When using multiple PSUs

Anthony10

Do you have to just connect some cables from each psu to your components, or can you run all the cables off of one of the psu when the psus are connected to eachother?

You need to spread out the load between them. So like:

PSU 1: Motherboard/GPU one

PSU 2: GPU 2-3-4 and don't do dual PSUs unless you are running 4 cards under LN2 and a 4960x at 7GHz or something.

I think that's how you do it, I have't tried.

Well I'm thinking of doing a custom case and making everything fit the dimensions of a 21.5" monitor, making it a beefy laptop pretty much. I'm in sketchup right now working out everything, and it seems a regular psu wouldn't work, but 2 SFX psus would. Just measuring how much space I need inbetween them for routing cables, thanks!

If anyone thinks this is wrong please let me know :P

That sounds amazing. You would just have your current hardware?

To use two PSU's at the same time in one system you need something like this http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_1066_186&products_id=31562

Oh yeah, otherwise they will not turn on together.

Correct you are sir :)

Ok. How would I go about using this http://www.frozencpu.com/products/13815/ele-933/Add2PSU_Multiple_Power_Supply_Adapter.html ? Can I just run the cables off one powersupply with this or would I have to split the cables up to both of the PSUs?

Correct you are sir :)

I was just remembering that I was trying to test a GPU and had to connect a CX430 to the new one and keep my system plugged in. I just tried to start the PSUs at the right time and it did not work LOL

It looks like you take a molex connector from the primary PSU and just plug in the 24 pin of the second PSU.

This better explains it visually

If you looked at my latest status update "I'm thinking of making some money this summer" :) again this is all speculation right now because who knows if I'll get enough money, but I'm planning on going all out like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3BGTg of course with 2x of that psu.

If I work half the weekdays of the summer for 5hours a day, I can make ~$1750, if I get payed minimum wage. If I sell stuff, I can get like atleast $2500, and I'll see if my dad wants to be a super nice person for the rest :P

Seems pretty straight forward, thanks. So would I be running cables from each PSU or just the primary? I can't tell in the video.

Just the primary PSU, but say if you wanted to make a sever and want 15-20 HDD's or SSD's you can use the cables from the second PSU if need be, same thing for PCI-E connectors and molex connectors

lol You will definitely need dual PSUs for that in a tiny case. I thought you meant for the 770 and all that you have now lol

If I were you, I would upgrade that CPU to an i7 and get a 780ti or two instead of a whole new system.

yes but you are not me and you don't know how to REALLY waste money :P a big bucket list thing I have is to make a super compact portable watercooled pc, and I'm trying to design it now and make the money for it :P, it would just be so awesome and unique.

You should totally do it.

Ok first of all you need to watch some videos or do some research on how to use dual PSUs in a system.

You will need that adapter @ericlee30 posted for both PSUs to turn on. This does NOT connect both power supplies together, it just makes them both turn on. Then you need to have cables coming  from both PSUs to your components. For example, one PSU has the motherboard 24 pin cable and moles/sata cables. Then the second PSU will have the PCI-E cables to power your graphics cards.

Also, what system specs are you using? There is almost no reason for 2 PSUs unless you are using over 2kW of power from one system, which is virtually impossible unless it is a mining rig.

ummmm usually a PSU and cables is not something you want to see in a build...

Back in the day, i would agree 100% with you, with all those nasty multi color wires going everywhere, but now a days with taking the time to single sleeve all the wires ( if he chose to do that). I personally would think it would look pretty clean and nice if done right.

yeah but theres no need to see them coming out from two PSUs...

seeing the wires is fine, but not the mess of the PSU modular interface, especially with 2 PSUs there will be a mess of wires everywhere

Yeah, I see your point there. That would be a ton of spaghetti strings everywhere.
