Apple's New MacBook Air Is Its Cheapest One Ever

megadarkwood

Is it now an actual competitive product?

The company put two new MacBook Airs on its website on Tuesday: an 11-inch laptop and 13-inch laptop, each available with either 128 GB or 256 GB of storage.

At $899, the 11-inch MacBook Air with 128 GB is the least expensive MacBook Apple has ever offered to the mass market, according to AppleInsider. Only one other time has the price of a MacBook dipped to $899, and that was only when Apple offered a special discount to educational institutions.

The laptops are similar to previous MacBook Airs, but each version costs $100 less than its predecessors and has faster, newer processors. The Airs are currently available for purchase online and at Apple Stores.

Apple didn't seem to do any advertising for these new MacBook Airs, and it's probably because it didn't need to. Apple sold 4.1 million Macsduring the first three months of 2014 -- up 5 percent from the same period last year. That growth is impressive because it happened during a year when sales for other laptops -- mostly those running Windows -- slid by almost 7 percent, according to analysts at Gartner.

Sure it's less expensive, still crappy specs

Of course handy for simple things such as browsing

I think like.. $700 is better, but if you want to throw in $200 for the looks, I don't really care

Pretty much equal, but of course I'd pick this macbook anyday over an ultrabook since I've had Mac for my whole life

tbh, at this price point the MacBook Air is at such a competitive value compared to ultra books at the market right now. Other ultra books with similar price point tend to have a mixture of both aluminium and plastic. The battery life on the 13 inch is perfect for taking notes all day

imho the price is pretty competitive, with my only gripe being 4gb ram. Also, $200 for doubling the SSD? thats a ripoff.

The Macbook air is still one of the best ultrabook's on the market imo

Might as well get a Chromebook for a fraction of that if you're going to get a laptop for web browsing and some "photo" editing.

Air is far more powerful. You can do much more.

Yeah, from a purely hardware point of view the Macbook Air is actually quite compelling compared to other notebooks on the market right now. However I would still personally not buy a Macbook for frequent use, even with windows installed.

At this price I think its actually one of the best general use laptops/ultrabooks available on the market

This is actually first Apple product I would like to have. But it would be hard choice choosing between this or Surface Pro 2 as I never used MacOS so I would not be comfortable using it.

Seems like a fair asking price for the design and engineering gone into these. If only I could have this laptop without OSX and the Apple logo (no hate)...

I'd consider a Macbook pro with 'retina' display, but not an Air.

For the 11 inch, the 13 inch is 1440x900.

With the Macbook Pro 'retina', the 13 inch is 2560x1600 and the 15 inch is 2800x1800. That is the reason I want the laptop, that and the design.

I don't think Apple are impressed with the Air displays either, they only quote the PPI on the Macbook Pros. :)

It's a toss-up between this and the surface pro 2.
