Advice Needed - Upgrading Old CPU (Core i5 750) + Motherboard (Asus P7P55D Pro) - What should I upgrade to?

Evad

Hi there LTT Forum Friends,

I am currently gaming on an old rig some mates threw together for me out of parts they had lying around. I recently got my hands on a Radeon RX 580 to replace my Nvidia GTX 960 and was thinking I could further breathe some new life into this old rig by adding a M.2 NVMe drive via a PCIe adapter card. However I discovered that my motherboard only has PCIe 2.0 slots and therefore cannot boot from NVMe drives 😞So now I am wondering if it might be time to upgrade my motherboard and CPU. I was hoping for some suggestions / advice as to what i should look for. It has been many years since I built a PC so I'm so out of the loop on what is what these days.

Currently I have the following hardware:

CPU = Intel Core i5 750 2.67GHz

Motherboard = ASUS P7P55D Pro

Graphics = Radeon RX 580 4GB

SSD = Samsung 860 Evo SSD (2.5inch SATA)

My goal would be to find something that could support booting from NVMe drives.

I'm not looking to upgrade to the latest/current gen stuff, as I don't have a huge budget.

Wondering what suggestions folk may have for upgrading my CPU/Motherboard.

Thanks so much

:-)

I recently upgraded from an i7-4790 that was for the longest time rocking just a GTX960 as well.  I had awesome success with upgrading it to a 1070 and even had an NVMe drive booted using a riser card.  Not the most eye catching build but certainly rocked most games for sure.  I flipped the PC on a local marketplace for about 500 total with all the storage I had in it. I think using a local marketplace would be a great way to find some excellent deals on hardware that is a few generations old.  A complete system that is a few generations old may only cost a few hundred depending on how far back you are willing to go.

To help a bit in case you haven't used one before or don't know where to start searching I found a few local listings in my area that are pretty typical from my experience.  Just search up any of the listed terms and you should find some interesting deals.  Sometimes people are not the best about putting the specific components they have and you might have to do a bit of digging.

System 1: $600

    - CPU: Intel i5 10400 LGA 1200 6C/12T

    - CPU Cooler: Stock Intel CPU Cooler

    - Motherboard: H510 Pro Wifi

    - Memory: Crucial 16GB DDR4 2666Mhz

    - Storage: WD SN570 500GB M.2 NVME

    - Graphics Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

    - Power Supply:  EVGA 600W PSU

    - Case: NZXT H210 itx case with  3x 120mm fans

    - OS: Windows 10 Pro

System 2: $435

    - patriot burst 120 GB SSD

    - 10th gen i7

    - NVIDIA gtx 1060 3 GB

    - 4 fans 2 are LED

Thanks for the swift replies. 🙂

I am in Australia so will have a look at some local listings...

Anyone else from down under can recommend a good place to find 2nd hand PC systems/components?

Last time I was in the market we had a paper trading post.. (haha i'm old) these days I expect it's all online.

The cheapest “decent” update I can suggest is an i3 10100f and a z490/z590 motherboard. You can pick up a 10100f for $60 on eBay used and then a z490 or z590 motherboard for around $80. Then you’d need 16gb of ddr4 3200 which would cost $45 or so.

If you wanna save another $10-20 you could go b560, but avoid b460 because b460 limits Ram to ddr4 2666 and you don’t want that.

That’s the cheapest you’re gonna get for a semi modern pc.

Noting that you’re in Australia, not sure how the prices for used parts are there so good luck on that part. You may have luck in the local market with Ryzen 1000 and 2000 CPUs and motherboards for cheap, just depends where you’re at.
