Faraday Cage Case

Has anyone considered lining the inside of a computer case (the paneling, and replacing the grills and other vents) with brass screen in order to turn the inside of the case into a Faraday cage? Would it have any benefits? Could it have any negative side effects? Don't know if it would be expensive either. Just a thought

You try it and tell us

But it may cause interference? (im guessing)

Well, a faraday cage blocks outside RM interference if I remember right. So wouldn't it be a good thing? protect your sh*t from outside interference. Now the real question is how to shield against EM interference :P

If there is ever an EMP strong enough to fry your computer that last thing you should be worried about is your computer.

Other than that, I'd can't think of any reason to have a Faraday cage.

Well, If I'm shielding my pc against an EM that strong I'm obviously preparing for those other things to be concerned about. Gonna need a pc to play on while I wait for the fallout to dissipate :P

I wouldn't see a problem an easy faraday cage would be to set your pc in a metal trash can on a cardboard box I would see if it caused any problems that way first

its GE (pause) TechNicks

my rig plus everything i have bought for it http://pcpartpicker.com/p/30sNV

if your pc case is made of metal, its already a faraday cage....

is it? thought it had to be brass screen or some other dense material.

Any conductive material will do (steel, copper, iron, aluminum...), the "cage" term used, is what throws people off :P

I don't think it would be a very effective cage until you made some modifications. You would need to scrape all the paint off where metal pieces meet so that they are not insulated from one another, and all holes for the fans would need a finer mesh covering them as all openings need to be smaller than the wavelength of the EMP's RF.

And all of your components would likely still be fried unless you unplug the computer.

Interesting, this topic was more of just a hypothetical. But still an interesting idea I think. Perhaps a better question would be, what good is a computer post Hemisphere wide EMP?

Honestly once the world got back on its feat, I'd bet computers would sell for insane amounts of money if the majority of them were wiped out...

I've thought about faraday cage shielding for my computer, but there was one major issue that made me scrap it completely. All desktop computers still require an external power source in order to function. If you were to experience an EMP strong enough to fry a computer, the cage would not help because the pulse would simply travel up the power cord and fry it that way. The only way to make a functional EMP proof desktop is to have a faraday cage large enough to enclose your entire computer AND its own dedicated off grid power source like a private generator.
