On the market for a new phone

alexdpars

I'm in Canada and I'm looking for a new phone since I'm going to give my iPhone 11 to my wife soon enough (by the end of November).

I love my iPhone 11 which is the first iPhone I ever owned. Prior that all the phones I had were android. I liked the note 3 just as much as I like my iPhone however I had a pixel 3xl and had some issues with it and then decided to give the iPhone a chance. I really like iOS had basically no issues with my iPhone. I don't look forward to go back to Android however I find the Nothing Phone Really tempting. The phone and the OS look awesome. However, I'm concerned with photo quality from the review but I also saw that recent update might fix that so I am wondering can I expect something similar to iPhone quality level from the nothing phone through software update ? I also consider buying a new iPhone but I want something that will be supported on the long term and have good camera quality so I am shopping for a 13 pro or a 14 pro. Can I expect the price of the 13 pro to lower enough that it would be a good value compared to buying a 14 pro ?

I've been watching a lot of reviews lately and I can't make up my mind especially since I can see the nothing phone in person.

I want something that will make sense price/durability wise. yes the iPhone have a higher price tag but I would keep it longer than the nothing phone 2-3 years vs 4-5 years.

Let me know your thoughts. Especially from someone that used both iPhones and nothing phone (pretty rare I know)

OnePlus 10 looks really good, and price is decent.

I won't use an iPhone and the Nothing phone reviews aren't turning me on.

I like the price/performance of the OnePlus currently.  Not really helpful but I'd be remiss not mentioning it.

iOS will be easier and more reliable. I don’t think nothing has committed to a support timeframe, they hadn’t just after launch anyway.

Nothing will beat the iPhone 14 Pro camera wise overall and the 13 Pro isn’t far behind.

Overall it depends what you value. I expect the 13 Pro to be supported a while as the 14 has the same SoC as it.

Thanks for your opinion. I don't think that the camera is better. The sensor is. At least vs the 13 pro but the 14 pro sensor have the same specs don't they?

I think the 14 will be supported 1 more year. I am just wondering if that make sense to go for it for the price difference and if the price difference between the 13 and 14 pro will be worht it. For now it's not worth it they have about the same prices

If you can find a good deal on the 13 Pro, it's dandy. I have one and it's still exceptional a year later. But if you can't... 14 Pro, all the way. The always-on display and camera improvements are worth a slight premium.

Don't get a Nothing Phone 1 if you're in Canada unless you really fancy experimentation. It should work, but your cell coverage won't be as strong, and you're in deep trouble if the phone breaks (you won't get warranty service, or even unofficial help from repair shops). That and it's really a mid-range phone with a nice design. The cameras won't match either iPhone, and there certainly isn't as much processing power. Don't get me wrong, Nothing made a good device — it's just not in the same class.

And not the same price though 😛 Nothing is just the option for me to go back to Android. I like the phone very much and the price is compelling. Why would it have less coverage than any other phone? Isn't an LTE antenna the same from a phone to another?

Not even close. The 14 pro is a 48MP sensor the 13 Pro is a 12 MP sensor on-top of thst there’s lens improvements

Depends that’s not always the case. The 6S was supported a lot longer than the 6 was.

The Nothing Phone 1 is meant primarily for European cell networks, and its on-chip frequency support is tailored to the bands used in those countries. Unfortunately, we're still not at the point where you can assume a phone will support every possible cell band on the planet, at least not with one single configuration — even Apple has sold slightly different iPhone models, at least for a while. Nothing hasn't secured the frequency clearances it would need to officially sell the phone in Canada, as it is, so it couldn't guarantee that your handset would work properly on Bell/Rogers/Telus/Freedom.

If I were in your boat and wanted to return to Android with a mid-range device, I'd probably get a Pixel 6a. It's 'just' 60Hz and has 128GB of storage, but it's as fast as the regular Pixel 6, offers 'pure' Android with fast updates and still takes very good photos for the price. There aren't many great choices for middle-of-the-pack Android phones in Canada, I've noticed; it's either the Pixel 6a or more compromised devices like the Galaxy A53 and Motorola Edge.

Get the 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Your carrier might have a solid trade-in deal going on right now. That's how I got one. Get one with plenty of storage too. 512GB, if you can. 14 Pro Max has a bigger display and better battery.

Just get a 13 Pro and save some money

It's not that easy, I'm afraid. An always-on display is a very handy thing, as Android users can attest; in fact, Apple's implementation is generally superior to what you find on Android. And while the Dynamic Island might be summarized as "making the most of a camera cutout," there are some functional camera upgrades that could be worth it if you're already in the market for a Pro model.

Don't get me wrong, the 13 Pro is still an option if the OP can find a great deal on it. But that's part of the problem — those deals aren't always easy to find. On Rogers, for instance, you can pay $35.30 a month to get a 13 Pro through instalments... or $37.86 a month to get a 14 Pro. When the difference is that small, you buy the newer phone.

Just watch the video and find out the reality of things...

I did, and it's not a very good video.

To start, the video creator not only frames it badly (who's upgrading from a 13 Pro to a 14 Pro?), it's not very useful for the OP — he's coming from an iPhone 11. This will be a gigantic upgrade, and it'd be silly to get the 13 Pro unless there's a major discount.

The battery life and camera verdicts in the video are generally inconsistent with reviews. The always-on display does reduce battery life, but it doesn't 'murder' longevity from the numerous tests I've seen. And besides, it depends on use cases. Unless you're using your battery so heavily that even a Pro model can't handle one day, you should be fine. On the camera front, I haven't seen others claim Apple is oversharpening or otherwise producing excessively high noise; it's not flawless, but I've seen a couple of reviews indicating that Apple has even improved photography in a couple of areas where Samsung historically came out ahead, like portraits and near zoom. And that video is definitely exaggerating problems with lens flare.

Is the lack of USB-C a problem in some cases? Yes. But the OP isn't moving 4K ProRes videos; it likely won't be a practical issue. And the video producer lost a lot of credibility when he complained about case incompatibility, and implied that Apple was deliberately changing the design just to spur case sales. I'm sorry, but the camera array is different because there are different cameras. Again, this also won't matter for the OP.

(Side note: as a general rule, it's good to ignore anyone who says "just watch this video" and can't be bothered to write thoughts of their own. It shows they don't think critically and aren't really listening to what you have to say.)
