[ShowCase] - Xbox360 Retro Build - Inspired by LTT Xbox Sleeper

Hey LTT Fans...

Came across Linus's xbox build a couple years ago, it inspired me to have a crack at doing my own project...

LTT Video ->

Fast forward. The project is complete, I have been happily enjoying couch retro gaming..

And I finaly! got Crash Bandicoot to 100% completion. That was the best nights sleep I had in years, tackling childhood goals 😆

For my build, I wanted to use the Xbox360. And run it as a dedicated emulation system for my loungeroom. Being inspired by Lunis since I was a kid, I wanted the art to be a trubute to his many years of service. Here is what I originaly had in mind... However plans changed, and I decided to go with a Dragon Ball Z theme. A close friend of mine passed a few years prior, and he was a massive fan; and so I eded up going with that so I had a nice reminder of him whenever I sat down to game... "Sorry Linus 😇"

Here is the mock I did of the design, feel free to take inspiration.

Here is how it turned out...

From the start, I knew I wanted to keep the Xbox as in-tact, and close to the original as possible. Minus the paint job...

  • Original power button to turn on
  • Working in-built wirless xbox controller support
  • No motherboard I/O cutout.
    - I saw other people do it this way; but as I only intended on using for the loungeroom, I knew I could ditch the other ports.

After some thermal tests, I did however have to cut out a space for some additonal cooling. When using XEMU for Xbox Classic, she cooked hot like a Guga Steak 🤣

And here are some random photos documenting the build process..

I had to carve parts of the case to mount the display ports etc. Also shave some of the case of where I needed extra space for cable routing.

I grabbed a windows controller receiver of Amazon, then soldered wires into the sycn button so I could route to the original connect button on the front of the console.

Using the original PCB. I burred out the original LED's and power button. Fitting them with my own power switch, and blue LEDs that link to the power pin connector on the motherbaord.

There was no good way to mount the GPU.. And in a rest position, it would have touched with the chassis and motherboard...
So I made a make-shift a plastic shroud for the base, then wedged screw in the top for for some clearence. And put hot-glue on the screwes to stop it from cunducting with the case.

My DIY paintshop 🙂
On the other side of the box, I closed part of the flaps, limiting how much airflow could pass. And had the tarp behind to catch any paint particals the did pass through. Most of it hit the walls of the box, and dried instantly.
