What happened to msata??

So I bought this old HP folio elitebook 9470m from eBay. Long story short, it was really slow. There was no way I can replace the processor of this so my only options were upgrading storage and ram.

I discovered that besides the drive bay, it has an mSata slot which I was not familiar with. It looked like m.2 but the screw notches were different. I tried to check online about what happened to msata to find no answers.

So what happened to msata? Why haven't I heard of it? What's the pros and cons between m.2, msata, and sata?

Old form factor, just a different form of SATA3 speed-limited drive.
