my temps are fine now but worried that fans are over 3 years old

I'm thinking 360mm rad

I don't want to go to cheap but think 800$ kits I've seen are a bit over kill

doesn't seem like a good a reason imo, unless you just want to build a custom loop, then go for it. otherwise, just wait until if/when a fan fails and cross that bridge then, replacement fans are also an option, and are usually pretty cheap.

Custom loops are fun and all, my personal rig has been water cooled for the past 7 years at this point, but there isn't a much of a point to them for most people and systems.

There are only really 3 reasons to water cool a systen

  1. Temps are high and you don't have room for bigger air coolers
  2. You want looks
  3. You want silence

If you fit into one or more of those camps, then yeah water cooling makes a bit of sense. If you don't, then there's not really that much of a point to it and you'd be better off getting a bigger air cooler and calling it a day

Can you fit a 420? I wouldnt do a single 360, never enough for decent temps and noise compared to keeping stock coolers.
