Installed 3080 TUF card in my system and now it will not turn on

Chosenporo

I've tried re-inserting the two 8 pin connectors and making sure everything is connected, but it will just not turn on. My PSU should be able to handle what I currently have installed, but maybe you guys know something I don't.

Specs:

Processor: (CPU) Intel® CoreTM i7 Quad Core Processor i7-7700k (4.2GHz) 8MB Cache
Motherboard: ASUS® PRIME Z270-P: ATX, LGA1151, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs
Memory (RAM): 16GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3000MHz (2 x 8GB)
Graphics Card: ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 TUF V2 LHR - 10GB GDDR6X RAM - Grafikkort
SSD: 500GB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5" SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
Hard Disk: 3TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 64MB CACHE
Power Supply: CORSAIR 750W TXm SERIESTM SEMI-MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling: Noctua NH-U14S Ultra Quiet Performance CPU Cooler
Extra Case Fans 1x 120mm Black Case Fan

Edit:

I found this video, that around the 13 minute mark explains that it may be because of the wiring, that it isn't able to feed enough power to the GPU. Could this be it?

Is this your PSU? Also you might want to upgrade motherboard and everything else to get more out of that GPU.

That's the PSU I currently have installed, yeah. Is the rest of the setup really that bad? Haha 😄 I built it almost 6 years ago.

I'm sorry my man but that PSU is too old for 3080. Can't handle voltage spikes like the newer ones. You can use your current build for 3080, but your cpu will bottleneck badly, especially at 1080p

I'm playing at 3440x1440, but I'll definitely look into upgrading. Damn, that sucks. Guess I'll go look for a newer one. Thanks for the help!

Ok thats perfect! You might get ok performance, def. try it out. I would get something like that, yeah I know your location, in your first post, "grafikkort", gave it away: https://www.proshop.dk/Stroemforsyning/Corsair-RM850-2021-Stroemforsyning-850-Watt-140-mm-80-Plus-Gold-certified/2970295

Nah PSU is not the problem, any PSU even 400W can boot with a 3080, the problem with spikes arise when gaming !

Plus your TXM750W should be perfectly fine

When booting do you have mobo error light on ? Do the GPU fans spin ?

Are you 100% sure? PSU is from 2011. Then should it be bios issue? @ChosenporoHave you tried updating bios? https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/PRIME/PRIME-Z270-P/HelpDesk_bios/

I'm sure that even a prehistoric PSU can boot up a PC as long as it provides enough power for the CPU + maybe 50W for the GPU

How do I update bios when the machine won't turn on? Also, I just plugged in my 1080TI and the system won't start now, either.

I can try plugging the card in again and look.

BIOS version is irrelevant when swapping GPU

Reset CMOS, check power connectors and retry

I've seen my fair share of defective/DOA Asus cards, so it could be that the card is defective. Does it work with any other GPU?

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

your right it's not old enough to be affected by this, but I would still do anyway, just because of ME and other stuff

I've reset CMOS, power connectors seem to be plugged in just fine, still no dice.

The PC won't even start booting, no fans are spinning, and I don't see any error light.

When nothing happens, it's either a short on the board that prevents it, or a power issue...

Did you try booting by shorting the front panel pins ?

Does the PSU seems "alive" or can you test it ?

I'll try looking into shorting the front panel pins, haven't heard of that before. My motherboard has some orange lighting that turns on when i flip the switch for the PSU, so I assume it's alive. It was working fine yesterday.

Hummm, only time I got that is when my board and/or GPU was shorted by coolant leakage, it went back again a day later when it has dried 🙂

Do you have anything watercooled?

Turns out I'm a fucking idiot who accidentally disconnected the cable that connects the powerbutton to the motherboard. I thank you for the extensive help, if you hadn't told me to short the front pins, I probably wouldn't have seen that the cable was missing. 😅 Have a nice day man!

And that saved you $100+ for a new useless PSU 🙂

Reminds me the time I replaced my cooler because it wasn't working, then realised when installing the new one that I'd disconnected the fan header of the old one!!🤣
