Have a friend selling one, just the air 16gb version

The starting price is $1000, so depending on how much its been used for maybe around $700-$750. Amazing laptop for the price

M2 is a nice improvement, but the new air is starting at $1200. If you can afford it the new air is very good. However, the M1 air is still amazing. The M1 is still a great machine and buying it would not be a bad decision at all.

I would prefer the M1 because it be cheaper but not sure how much I be paying for  16gb model

Used models of that config hover around 800-900$ for in great shape ones.

Check the cheapest price brandnew in your Country, doesn't matter if apple directly or any third party vendor like Amazon, Newegg, whateever.

 

Depending on the Condition, Age, Batterycycles, i'd think 70-85% of that Price is fair. Maybe the lower End, since it's a Friend

 

I also think, getting a 512/16gb Configuration used for the Price of a brandnew base model is very Fair. Friend or not.

Its still $999 on Apples website, if its from your friend I wouldn't take it for more than around $750

That's way below market value...  A used 16GB M1 Air is worth $950 on the secondary market.
