I upgraded from a GTX 1050 to an RTX 3060 ti and I've been dealing with annoying random crashes ever since when I play games or use programs like Unreal Engine. I'm pretty sure this is because my power supply is only 550w so I tried to upgrade it to a 850w one but that thing trips the breaker in my house when I try to use it. The only other solution I can think of is to somehow lower my GPU's power consumption but don't really know how to go about doing that.

  1. Download MSI Afterburner (it doesn't matter if you've got an MSI card, and ASUS card, EVGA card, etc., this tool works on all of them)
  2. Install it
  3. Open it (if you have an iGPU, make sure you're selecting the 3060 Ti)
  4. Lower the power limit slider
  5. Boom, you're done, it'll consume less power.

That said, if your PC is tripping your breaker, I'd try changing the circuits that some of your devices are using so that you can use the card without lowering the power limit. You paid for a 3060 Ti, you might as well get the performance that you paid for instead of losing a bit by lowering the power limit. You can mess around with undervolting if you want, but it is quite a lot of effort.

550w should be enough for 3060, if it doesn't, then your psu probably not that good to begin with.

if you're using 850w, the power consumption should be the same as using 550w. so i don't think its the cause of the powertrip.

use a dedicated wall outlet (not shared with any other gadgets).

your pc is only using like 2amps on full load at the worst situation, so lowering your power usage might safe you 0.1-0.5A, but it probably would not fis the problem still

I Use my knowledge as business owner and self taught technician aswell as an AI to help people. AI might be controversial but it actually works pretty well 90% of the time.
