airpods pro audio changes when on calls

i recently purchased my airpods pro on sunday and am currently using them as my audio for my windows laptop.

i was on a video call when i changed my microphone setting from realtek to airpods.

the audio immediately went doo doo and everything sounds muffled and generally awful

i tried changing back to realtek and it still remained the same

i leave the call and then the audio returns back to normal

everytime when i call someone the audio dies

That's normal, with standard Bluetooth headsets anytime you use the microphone it needs to switch to Call mode with crappy mono audio.

To extrapolate a bit more, Windows has two drivers for every bluetooth headset - "Headphones" which is stereo, and "Headset" with subtext "Wireless Hands-Free" which is the low bandwidth mono. If you want to try another microphone, set the headphones driver to the default communication device in your sound control panel. Usually the Line Array mics on laptops are slightly better than what's built into earbuds.
