I bought an old computer for 47 bucks off an ebay auction, do you think it could run a minecraft java edition server?

This is my first post, so if this is in the wrong place my bad, I recently bought an old desktop computer off of amazon with a motherboard with a Pentium E5400, Nvidia GT 610, 8 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, and I think a wifi dongle the seller is selling with it? Could a motherboard and processor this old still run a Minecraft server, or will I need to upgrade it a bit first? I would like to make it into a Minecraft server, but I might at some point try making my own vpn because I think it'd be fun.

From personal experience, anything much slower than a Sandy/Ivy Bridge quad-core i5 is going to struggle running modern Minecraft servers, so considering that machine has a Core 2 era Pentium... I can't imagine it's going to have a very fun time.

I mean, you can run a minecraft server on a raspberry pi. That CPU is pretty damn old at this point, but its probably worth trying just to have some fun.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

It will run, but it might not be the best experience. If it's a DDR3 machine, throw some extra RAM into it.

Depends on your use case, no "extensive redstone" and 2-4 players in a localised area, you'll be fine.

So should I try to buy 32 gb worth of ddr3 ram?

Absolutely not. I very highly doubt that machine even uses DDR3, let alone supports more than 8GB (officially, at least).

Yeah so I guess I should've just bought an old mobo or something that supports 4th gen intel cpus cause I still have an old 4th gen i5 sitting around but idk if it still works because the reason it's sitting around is because a few years ago I done goofed and I stuck in a "gpu power cable
" I bought from amazon not realizing that won't work and so I fried the mobo. I think it could still work but I'm gonna have to find out I guess.

The GPU was still working after the mobo fried so the cpu might still work too.

I just found an offer for 47 bucks for a mobo with intel 4th gen. Well I guess I'll just need to get that instead.

I wouldn't put any more money into it, that thing's a relic. Fine if you want to make an XP machine, but I wouldn't want to try and do anything modern on it.

Look into Ivy Bridge or newer corporate desktops. You can usually find an entire PC (minus storage) for not much more than that eMachines cost.

Update on the Java Edition Server on that old computer I bought:

It came in today and I've tested it a bit, it seems to run fine with just me in it, so we will see if the server is bad once we get some people in it. If it does end up getting really bad once a few people join I'll buy a new computer, I just can't right now cause I'm really busy and stuff cause it's almost my graduation from high school. Thanks a lot for all of your help though everyone!

I'm using arch linux to run it so that's probably why it runs better(Why run a server on windows when you can run it on Linux cause it's best for servers + better performance cause no gui.)

Sorry for the late reply I've been busy all week, personal things. I was looking for one with 8gb of ram in it, but everywhere I've looked has either been sold out or has been increased significantly in price.
