is it worth it to buy a i7 8700k for 300€ (used)

Atm I have an i7 8600k and I found a used 8700k on ebay for 300€. Rn I am not really interested in an entire system upgrade but the small boost in performance might be worth it?
(I play mostly Civ6, satisfactory, Cities Skylines, ARK, The Forest and similarly demanding games)
thanks in advance ❤️

Well I was choosing the 8700k for convenience since I already have a system build on the same platform, however since its not great value I dont think I will upgrade anyway, thank you and have a nice day/night!

Horrifically bad buy with horrifically bad value, maybe under 200€ it would be something to consider if you already got s good board but 300€ is outrageous, might aswell get a 5700x that will completely obliterate that 8700k

If you seek more performance maybe delid and overclock the cpu? K cpus are pretty useless on the newer platforms but you should be able to get noticable gains with cpu oc since its an older cpu with garbage stock turbo at a pitifull 4.3ghz, Max 1.52v vcore according to intel 14nm spec but youll prob get nowhere near that due to temp limits so stay under 1.4v unless you can keep cpu <70c

Isn't that like $40 less than it was released for 5 years ago? If you talked the seller down quite a bit, it wouldn't be too bad, but at that price I'd avoid.
Especially when you can get one for way less than that on eBay.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

No, its an extremely small boost in performance. I would upgrade to a 12400 or 12600

Not for 300, maybe 150. It’s not like the old days where people would line up to buy old hardware like that.

AMD R7 5800X3D | Thermalright Aqua Elite 360, 3x TL-B12, 2x TL-K12
Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z @ 3733C14
Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC @ 3045/1495 | WD SN850, SN850X
Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | Fractal Torrent Compact, 2x TL-B14

Pretty old part. It's fine if you already have it, but don't go out of your way to get it. If it's free or close to free...sure. But I wouldn't pay for it.

6/6 to 6/12

Mah

Its also pretty pricy

A good upgrade will be a 9900K for maybe 200

Other then that - a hard pass

9900k would be okay, but even then it's a stretch. I personally can't support buying anything today that is still PCIE3. Some cards depend on PCIE4 at this point, especially at the budget level, and the upcoming GPU releases may have some more significant differences on the mid and high end than we currently see on PCIE3 vs. 4.

For $200 and 9900k, I'd rather  buy a 12400F + B660 for a little bit more and keep the older system parts for a different purpose. Or sell it off as a combo which is often easier than just a CPU.

The difference between PCIE3 and 4 tops at 10 fps max

And im pretty sure he wont be buying any low tier card

But its up to him

If he can get a good price for his cpu+mobo and he needs those extra frames he could sell it and go for an I5 12400+B660

He'll probably need a new and faster ram but ddr4 3600MHz CL18 is really cheap today

It matters if you buy a card limited to x8 or x4 bus, which seems to be happening more and more in mid and low end GPUs and is more likely to be a card the OP might buy given their budget orientation.

As it stands, you can't look at 6400, 6500XT, or even to a point 3050 or 6600/6600XT tested on PCIE4 systems and expect the exact same performance on a PCIE3 system, even if the difference in PCIE3/4 on traditionally faster cards like 3070+ don't have a problem with PCIE3.

As someone with the fastest PCIE3 CPU, I also have to wonder if an upgrade from my 3080 would be hindered by PCIE3 (and not just the CPU in general). So I won't likely be upgrading my GPU alone when the next gen launches.
