Okay so I have like a 250 asus router I have the premium 50 mb download that you have to pay for and it's great for most things just watching videos is terrible like unwatchable at 1080 and 720 and no im not willing to turn down the quality  can somebody explain

ISP and video website? Could be throttling. I would try a free VPN to see if it helps at all.

i'm a hopeless noob when it comes to networking, but that said, it depends on what videos you are watching, is it youtube?, it doesn't matter if you have 1 gigabit down if the server you are connecting to is shite and incapable of sending you the ammount of data you are capable of recieving from the isp, and then theres the throttling.. i'm sure there is software and ways to keep track of the packets you are recieving and whatnot, but im not the one to show you how.

Hola chrome extension, not too sure if its a VPN or proxy but its free.

Connect your computer directly to your model (no router).

Is your problem solved?

 

If not, then the router is not the issue. Contact your ISP.

If yes, then the router is at fault, check for the latest firmware, maybe it has a fixed, else get another router.

Either your getting throttled badly or your wifi is shit if your on wifi. Do what @GoodBytes said and if that doesn't work then try something like Hola of Hotspot. There's one VPN that only cost 40 a year that tek syndicate uses that speeds up video streaming. I guess also a tor browser would work, but putting personally details in is just a nono.

You might be running into issues with wifi channel conflicts.  I see this happen all the time at work.  Linus made a really great video that explains what's going on, on his techquickie channel:

Not if his ISP is throttling specific traffic.
