Can someone explain the difference between these routers?

coaltown992

So I initially ordered the first one but it's on back order, but it looks like the second one I can pick up today in store. I just can't figure out what the differences is...

Just now, Levent said:

this.

essentially, the U is the one step up:

- more memory (most likely a side effect of other reasons and just used as marketing fluff)

- 2.5G port.

oh.. and the gaming marketing.. very different. much more frags per second with the GAMING router...

They're very similar, but the AX86U has slightly higher end specs as well as a 2.5 Gb/s WAN port. The CPU has two more cores, and the RAM amount is doubled to 1GB.

@Levent Before you laugh at the idea of the same product having different model numbers based on where it's sold (which isn't the case with this particular router, but still), you should know that ASUS has done that exact thing before. For example: I own two ASUS RT-AC68 routers. One is the AC68R and the other is the AC68U. The "U" version was sold from online retail sites like Amazon, but the "R" model was only sold in physical retail stores like Best Buy. Internally they're exactly the same with no hardware or software changes other than the model number.

The RT-AX86S is a new lower cost variant of the RT-AX86U.  Dual core CPU versus quad-core, no 2.5 Gbps interface, and only 512 MB of RAM versus 1 GB for the RT-AX86U.  They both run the same firmware.
