Valve pretty much says you will void your warranty if you open the device up, but FTC law says it's okay to open devices you have purchased. Is this illegal or you think they would honor a warrenty repair if you add an SSD then later your screen backlight dies.

This is the covered screw issue rewritten.  They can say anything they want, but they can’t do anything they want.  Seems to me what they are saying is that they really don’t want you to open the thing but can’t actually stop you.  There might be legal wrangling though to make them actually honor the law though.

Source? Last I heard was: if you open it and damage it - that will void your warranty.

That’s also the law

if you open it and damage it, the company has no reason to honor any warranty(and they need to prove it

if you don’t break anything, they can’t void it (they might still, because it’s not worth cost of the legal battle to fight it)

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Yeah.
I can't find what the OP is claiming anywhere (just opening it), maybe I missed it... @DeadPixels1994source?

Here is what is on Valve's site:

All of these look reasonable to me.

So if you @DeadPixels1994swap the SSD and the screen dies, unless swapping the SSD somehow messed up the screen they can't void your warranty.
I am not in the US, so I don't know your consumer laws and thus I don't know on whom the burden of proof falls, maybe some US forum user will chip in regarding that... Again all these exclusions look reasonable to me.

In that case, if installing/swapping a SSD somehow breaks another component, you can simply revert the modifications and send it in for repair, claiming you "cleaned it in a manner as specified in the Hardware manual", unless the manual states that you should not open the Steam Deck at all.

Generally speaking, "do not open" can't void your warranty.
I just reserved a Steam Deck. I'll be getting it "soon enough" - probably in 6 months.

Sounds like a huge waste of processing power and battery. But even the most expensive one is cheaper than DJIs smart controller... Now the problem is getting a good USB-C radio with decent antenna to get a good range.

Does the whole "you can break warranty stickers without voiding your warranty" apply only to the US? Or does Canada have something similar?

Software would have to be written and I don’t know what it’s got for antennas, but if it has the range in the radio band the drone likes I don’t see why not.  I suspect most of the drones that work with phones might be able to use it.  I could maybe see a hack where you opened it up and put a cantenna or a yagi on the thing to increase range.  Have to keep the antenna pointed at the drone of course and there is the problem of return signal.

It will vary by nation.  The EU for example has an automatic one year warranty on everything, so it would work there I think.  Canada isn’t EU afaik though.

I remember a website once named “colossal waste of bandwidth” I don’t remember what happened to it.

If the drone in question doesn’t use wifi or Bluetooth USBC to microUSB2 cable would likely be needed because the bit with the radio is likely to have microUSB2

Not really. If the modulation and coding scheme are known, you can use SDR on the deck. A limesdr mini could be used. I bet it has more than enough bandwidth for the application.

Too many possibly applicable acronyms for SDR for me to know what you are talking about.  LimeSDR mini I could find, but they appear to sell for $200 or so, which makes it out of reach for this concept I think.  I was thinking whatever would be needed would need to be under $100 and microUSB2 is cheap.

  • 1 month later...

got mine today the 512GB, installed the steam OS upgrade, tried it for 10 minutes. the HAptics where all over the place, even with a calibration, where left was set to 1 and the rest 5.. it was just horrendous how bad it was.. and not always working..

i packed it in its small box again, did an online refund.. so hopefully i can get my 675euros back.. what a poor piece of plastic that device is, it seems more like just surplus garbage than an actual good device. the switch feels like a quality product compared to this, even the old Wii U remote thing.. with a screen.
