Will my GPU bottleneck my 8 years old CPU?

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

There is always a bottleneck. That isn't the problem

The problem is that when a part of the system is getting so behind it's causing you undesirable performance. So are there games you play where you are having bad performance (framedrops, stutters,...)? This is quite common in new games with just a pure quad core.

Hi guys i have MSI GAMING X GTX 980 howevever my CPU is kinda old (INTEL CORE I5-4690k) i wonder if the gpu will bottleneck my CPU that hard? should i move to newer CPU maybe 6-8TH gen Intel CPU? ryzen cpu is still expensive in my country even the 1st gen ryzen CPU still cost around $307.18 but that doesnt end there a second hand intel core i7 6 to 9TH gen is also expensive idk why but it seem to be overprice, intel core i7-8700K and Intel core i7-9700K has almost same price meanwhile intel core i5 6 to 9th gen is also overprice and some seller selling higher than msrp price (i saw someone selling 9700K higher than 10700K price) i wanna find good cpu for the gtx 980 under 300 bucks btw i got the GTX 980 for $140 and yes its working but i notice my cpu usage is higher before i upgrade to gtx 980 my old gpu was GTX 950

Why the huge font size?

I have your same CPU with a 1070 Ti, and in all games the graphics card is still the bottleneck. You'll be perfectly fine

if something were to bottleneck your system, it would rather be your CPU bottlenecking your CPU but your CPU&GPU combo is pretty good. A GPU ever so slightly bottlenecking a CPU is what you ideally want

For games you need performance from your graphics card, and your graphics card needs the CPU to have over head.

So you want the GPU usage to be at 100% or close to it,usually 88%~92% and below means that something is bottlenecking the GPU.

The lower the GPU usage during load the higher the severity of the bottleneck.
