The Stormtooper - From Air to Water | An Upgrading Build Log

TheToxicgamer97

Got my new keyboard today :D This is my first mechanical keyboard, and this is the first thing I'm typing with it and I love it already! Cooler Master CM Storm QuickFire Rapid-i with Cherry MX Brown Switches http://gaming.coolermaster.com/en/products/keyboards/rapid-i/   It has reasonably bright white LEDs with a few brightness levels and a white backplate that looks really nice to give a bit of a glowing effect. I think I might buy some o-ring mods mainly because I'm so used to membrane keyboards, or maybe I'll just get used to this. It is a ten keyless meaning it without a numberpad. It will take me a long time to get used to not having one, but I really like the look of this and I noticed I would always bump my mouse into my numberpad when playing Battlefield, so this should fix the problem. My only complaint so far is when releasing the spacebar there is some sort of springy sound. That is just a minor problem and the o-rings will probably fix it anyway. One last note is that it is a lot heavier than expected. I'm not sure if all mechanical key boards are like this, but I actually like it.

Another Planning Update that's Actually Almost the Same as One of Yesterday's

Hello again,

I now narrowed my case search two cases each in only one color. I have decided that I either want the CM Storm Scout 2 in White http://gaming.coolermaster.com/en/products/cases/scout_2_ghost_white/ or the Vengeance C70 in Black http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-c70-mid-tower-gaming-case-gunmetal-black (with this window mod: http://mnpctech.com/mnpctech-clear-case-pc-panels/corsair-c70-window-replacement-clear-fan-holes-120mm/corsair-c70-custom-window.html) I absolutely love the exterior look of the Scout 2 and the window with two fan mounts below it are perfect for what I want. However the case is smaller than the C70 an it would be difficult fitting two rads (one actually externally on top) and everything else. The C70 is still an amazing looking case, just not in white. There is plenty of room inside to fit both radiators with everything else (or at least I hope so,) better cable management options, and has a large side panel for viewing all the good stuff. Let me know which case you like and if you think the external rad on the Scout 2 would look neat or dumb. As for my actually cooling look I have made several adjustments from my original post and am still in the process of changing a few items. When I think I have everything planned out I will give you guys another update. Thanks for reading and don't forget to follow this topic! :D

yeah, some small keyboards have the keys a mashed together and the keys are weird lengths.

What don't you like about it? The thing I just realized I don't like about it is that it's a smoked window instead of clear. I think I'm gonna go with the C70, but I'm not buying for a while so I have time to decide

Planning Update: Case Decision, An Upgrade, and Water Cooling

Hello Everyone,

After a couple weeks of research and decision making, I have finally made up my mind on what mid-tower case I want to put move my build into. As most you know I currently have the Azza Genesis 9000  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517019 (Which I might sell, so if you're interested, let me know) This is a full-tower case, which is much too empty for my build, and even when I add water cooling, I feel like it will still look this way. Another problem I ran into was that I want to simplify my desk setup by putting my consoles somewhere else (like on a shelf) and putting my tower next to my monitors. This led to another issue where even if i did want to put this massive case on my desk, the window is much too small for my liking. To solve this, I chose to rebuild my system in the Corsair Vengeance C70 in Arctic White http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139014&cm_re=c70-_-11-139-014-_-Product with the following window mod to remove the fan mounts http://mnpctech.com/mnpctech-clear-case-pc-panels/corsair-c70-window-replacement-clear-fan-holes-120mm/corsair-c70-custom-window.html    Sorry to those that already read that part in previous posts, I just like to rant :P I chose this case because it look really nice, has a full window, great cable management, and can (hopefully) hold the water cooling loop I'm planning which includes two radiators.

Now I need some opinion on a few upgrades I'm considering. Currently I have a single 128G ADATA Premier Pro SP900 SSD and 1TB Western Digital Green Drive. Not really knowing how much space Windows 7 would take up when I bought my drives, I hadn't realized that my SSD would only hold the OS and Battlefield 4. Now, as I am playing more PC games, I want to be able to load them faster and just have all the benefits SSDs have to offer. So lately I have been considering buying a second SSD of the same model and capacity and configuring it in raid with my current one. Most of my programs are on the WD Drive, so I wouldn't lose any of that, but as for the OS, I was thinking about upgrading to Windows 8.1. It's clearly superior as far a performance goes, so I figure why not. However, at the same time I realize that I've been playing a lot of console lately (which contradicts what I said 3 sentences ago but whatever) so at the same time I feel like it would be a waste of time and money. Please let me know your thoughts on this situation :)

Now to discuss the water cooling. I have been doing a ton of research of different water cooling products and have come to a decision between two reservoir options.

This is option one where the reservoir and pump are combined and sit upright on a stand mounted to the bottom of the case.

The res itself is blue, but I may get a clear one and use blue LEDs

post-45682-0-91828800-1402452656.png

This is option two, which I am favoring at the moment. Here the pump and reservoir are separate.

The res would mount to the side of the case, is clear and I would use blue LEDs to illuminate the water.

The pump sits on the bottom of the case attached to a more aesthetically pleasing pump stand the the stock one.

post-45682-0-04086600-1402452963.png

Another decision that should be pretty simple is the color fittings to use. I can't choose between these Bitspower G1/4 Thread 3/8" ID x 5/8" OD Compression fittings in black http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10035/ex-tub-604/Bitspower_G14_Thread_38_ID_x_58_OD_Compression_Fitting_-_Matte_Black_BP-MBCPF-CC3.html#blank or white http://www.frozencpu.com/products/21725/ex-tub-2163/Bitspower_G14_Thread_38_ID_x_58_OD_Compression_Fitting_-_White_BP-DWCPF-CC3V2.html?tl=g30c409s1608  The case is white and I have white cables, so you would think to use white fittings. But this makes me think that there could end up being too much white. There is a lot of black in the water cooling loops such as the rads, blocks, pump stand, etc, so black could be used for some variation. However this leads back to the white fittings because although the blocks and such are black, the fittings will be directly on these parts, so that might end up being too much black. I'm not exactly a designer, so I don't what actually looks good. So again, let me know your opinions :D So far I've stuck with the same CPU block, the XSPC Raystorm for AMD http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14191/ex-blc-972/XSPC_RayStorm_High_Performance_Acetal_CPU_Liquid_Cooling_Block_-_AMD_Sockets_AM2_AM2_AM3_FM1.html  The GPU block also remains the same, EK Thermosphere which is now released I have one question about this block and that is if this block can be used as a standalone. On the site it says designed for use with "interconnects in multiple graphics card systems" so I'm not really sure if I can use this block just using fittings.  http://www.ekwb.com/news/488/19/EK-Thermosphere-a-new-universal-GPU-water-block/  I don't see why I wouldn't be able to, but I've never done a custom loop before so I don't know. As far as radiators go I'm using an Alphacool NexXxoS Monsta Dual 120mm Radiator in the front of the case http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16236/ex-rad-410/Alphacool_NexXxoS_Monsta_Dual_120mm_Radiator_-_80mm_Thick.html#blank  and an Alphacool NexXxoS XT45 Full Copper Dual 120mm Radiator on top http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14917/ex-rad-335/Alphacool_NexXxoS_XT45_Full_Copper_Dual_120mm_Radiator.html?tl=g30c95s160  The only question I have here how the tubing should be laid out with the rad in the top. I was hoping to go from the CPU to the rad (with the ports in the back of the case) and then to the reservoir. However, this wouldn't make sense, since I plan on putting the res in the front, bottom of the case, behind the other radiator. This would cause tubing to cross over the entire case to reach from the top left to the bottom right. Then I though about just flipping the top rad to put the ports in the front of the case. This made me remember hearing something about having tubing routed up the the right being ugly. I haven't really seen it for myself so I'm not really sure what they meant by that. For fans I plan on using Silverstone Air Penetrators on the radiators since they're silent and have great performance http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11259/fan-719/Silverstone_Air_Penetrator_AP121_120_x_120_x_25mm_Fan_-_UV_Blue_Blades_SST-AP121.html  and use Noiseblocker fans everywhere else http://www.frozencpu.com/products/8407/fan-524/Noiseblocker_NB-BlackSilentFan_XL1_120mmx25mm_Ultra_Quiet_Fan_-_1000_RPM_-_13_dBA.html  Tubing was a simple choice for me, I am going with PrimoChill PrimoFlex Advanced Tubing in Brilliant UV Blue http://www.frozencpu.com/products/17885/ex-tub-1616/PrimoChill_PrimoFlex_Advanced_LRT_Tubing_38ID_x_58_OD_-_10ft_Retail_Pack_-_Brilliant_UV_Blue_PFLEXA10-58-B_w_Free_Sys_Prep.html  Now for my last few questions. This part is all about the coolant. I've decided using distilled water is probably the best way to go. I know this comes with the challenge of needing many additives and that's what I need information on. I know I need silver for antimicrobial purposes and I know I can use a small drop of dish soap for a reason I can't even remember :P My question is about the issue of corrosion. Both my block are acetal, but my radiators are copper and who knows what other metals throughout the loop. I know there are some anti-corrosives like this one: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/21400/ex-liq-95/Feser_Base_Corrosion_Blocker_-_50mL_-_FB-0055.html?tl=g30c103s186#blank  But just how well does it work? Another concern is algae. I'm not sure if this is fixed by the antimicrobial silver solution so I found this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11744/ex-liq-154/IandH_Dead-Water_Copper_Sulfate_Biocidal_PC_Coolant_Additive_-_15_mL.html#blank  Please let me know if this is necessary or if the silver removes algae.

Here is an image of my full wishlist which has the first reservoir option describes earlier and doesn't include coolant and additives:

post-45682-0-18956500-1402455129_thumb.p

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this extensive update and answering all my question which I guess are mostly opinion based :/ Let me know what you think of this plan and I'll give you an update as soon as I order my case or make changes to my planning! :D

i would go for a 240/256gb ssd rather than 128gb in raid. the extra speed isn't that noticeable and you will be able to put many more games on it.

i like the pump and res to be separate as it looks nicer but it will take you a bit more time to install it that way.

i like the rest of the components, dat xspc raystorm is nice. but i would go for a full cover gpu block if you can find one.

You must think I mean RAID 1 which, with 2 drives, would give the capacity of 128gb, but have it protected/copied on the second drive. I plan on using RAID 0 which doubles the space of the smallest drive (128 x 2 = 256) so I would have 256gb total.

I agree that the separate pump and reservoir will look nicer.

My card is non-reference so I can't get a full block sadly :( Wish I knew these things when I bought the card.

So no acrylic tubing?

Darn.

I love how you quoted my post xD

As for the acrylic tubing, I just don't like the look of it all that much :/

Wait what.

You don't enjoy the look of sexy, rigid tubing with sleek 90 degree turns that aren't interupted by random curves of rubbery tubing?

And yes, that post I quoted was indeed, a novel.

My card is non-reference so I can't get a full block sadly :( Wish I knew these things when I bought the card.

i know what you meant, but 128+256 is 384gb which would be more storeage and its safer as if one drive dies then the other will be intact and i don't think you'll notice the slower speed.

Ohhh, I see what you mean. That would make sense, but the way it works is that it only doubles the amount of the smallest drive, rather than adding the two together. So I would still only have 256gb :/

It looks alright, that was an enticing description, but I just prefer the look of normal tubing. Maybe I'll use rigid tubing in a future build

Slightly Disappointing Update

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since my last update and I've been doing some thinking. I have decided not to create a custom water cooling loop and just keep it as is. However, I still want a mid tower case and have chosen to switch to the Scout 2 in Arctic White. I love this case more than the Vengeance C70 which I chose for more space. But now that I don't need the space the Scout 2 is perfect. I'm 16 years old (almost 17) and I need to start thinking smart and save my money. I will be needing to afford car insurance, gas and soon college. sorry if this disappoints any of you, but I am actually very excited for this case, I will most likely be doing a custom loop at some point, just not as near in the future as I had originally thought. thanks for the support and help thus far!

i don't blame you tbh. your first car will be the best thing you've ever had and it gives you a lot more freedom. shame about the custom loop, but at least you've got a new case.

I ended up having to get the black one because they discontinued the white one. Why do people hate white cases? :( Oh well, it is what it is! Get ready for a black and blue build! :D

Finally Got a New Case

As you know from some recent posts, I decided to pull the trigger on the CM Storm Scout 2. I wanted to get it in Ghost White but it was discontinued and I couldn't find it anywhere so I just when with black. I wasn't sure about the black and blue, but this looks great :)

This is the box :P

This is my new case next to the old one

This one's my favorite :) Side view of the outside after the switch. The red LED fans came with the case I will order new fans right after I finish this post.

I love the way this build came out, I just need to get some more fans and LEDs and it will be perfect :D

As I said in a previous post, I decided not to do water cooling due to the expense and that I just need to save up for things like car insurance and college. I will still update this thread if I ever add anything, and I guess the title is a little misleading at this point, but oh well :/
