Is the Corsair HX1200 enough wattage for my build?

PaladinPanic

I'm getting ready to build my new PC soon but wanted to double check that I'm getting a good PSU that'll offer more than enough wattage than what it needs. This build is gonna be using a 5950x and 3090 FE with a focus on overclocking as well as using a full custom loop for cooling. I know Nvidia recommends a 750W PSU on their product page for a 3090 FE and I've seen some people recommend a 850W, so I figure the HX1200 would be enough to support everything plus a few peripherals including dual monitors. Here's all the parts below

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5950X
M/B: Asus Crosshair VIII Extreme
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo 64GB (4x16GB) DDR4-3600 CL14
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB
GPU: Nvidia 3090 FE
Case Fans: Lian Li Uni Fan AL 120 (9 total)
Distro Plate: EK-Quantum Reflection PC-O11D XL D5 PWM
Peripherals: Asus PG279QM (2 total), keyboard, and mouse

This is why I hate those wattage calculators. Your PSU isn't powering the monitors.

Is the HX1200 the same price or cheaper than the 1000 or a 950? You should be able to use a 950W just fine.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Yeah I agree, 1200 is overkill. Running that setup through my own calculations and a few others I use, and you're way shy of even 1000W. You could squeak that system by with a high quality 750W if you wanted to, but I'd personally go for a high quality 850-900W just for good overhead.

By all means, if the price is right throw the 1200W in there, just remember that every PSU has a range where it operates most efficiently.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Generally it seems to be around the same price other 1000W PSU's if not a little bit more expensive. From what I've seen theyre mostly in the $150-200 range and I can get the HX1200 for under $250

Yeah that's why I picked it is because its very solid PSU that's been out for a few years and from all the many reviews I've seen has hardly any known issues. Plus the fact that it's a platinum rated is nice. I just wanted to make sure that it is plenty for the build because I didn't know how accurate most wattage calculators were.

FWIW, gold, platinum etc doesn't say anything about how good the PSU is. Those ratings can and have been faked. They just say that it uses that much of the power it recieves.

Why not go with an RM850x and save quite a bit on the PSU? Even the HX1000 is $205 at Amazon.

This is the right mindset to have. Better to have a overkill PSU and never have to ask yourself this very question every time you decide to upgrade a part. Combine that with spreading the cost out over probably 10 years and potentially multiple builds, then factoring in cost of inflation, parts availability, etc... investing now pays off in the long run.

I have the HX1000 Plat Ed in my main rig, should be sufficient for your rig as well. But, if the difference in costs is negligible, or if you don't mind the extra moolah for the HX1200, why the heck not?! My philosophy is, efficiency be damned, I'd rather take an OP'ed PSU over one lower powered PSU that is running at optimum efficiency anytime, anywhere. Besides, RTX 3090 are known for crazy high transient power spikes, which the HX1200W would handle better.
