RTX 3070 Ti VS RTX 3080 Ti

So my current gpu (RTX 2070 Super Founders Edition) is starting to have issues and I’ve been wanting to upgrade for a while now so I’m finally pulling the trigger. However I cannot decide which gpu to get. I play at 1080p. I will be buying from a scalper because I don’t really have a choice. My two options are an RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition for $900 cash, or an EVGA FTW3 Ultra Gaming RTX 3080 Ti for $1700. I can afford the 3080 Ti but I’m having a hard time justifying spending that much on a graphics card. I do want to point out that the MSRP of the EVGA card is $1430 so it’s a $270 markup, and the 3070 Ti is $600 so it would be a $300 markup. What are your guys thoughts on which one I should get?

The 3080ti even at MSRP is a terrible deal over RTX 3080.

Honestly... I find 3060ti perfectly adequate for 1440p 144Hz so I don't see any reason to not pick up 3070ti for 1080p and "save" some money.

It sucks cause the only 3080 being sold in my area is an Asus Strix one for $1600 which is ludicrous. I think I will go with the 3070 Ti then. Thank you for the response!

I've been stalking my local computer shops hunting GPUs for friends trying to build. The answer is: buy whatever you can afford and is in stock at the time.

My observations are:

  • 3080 10Gb is best value but they no longer make these
  • 3080 12Gb is practically 3080 Ti, except slight discount
  • 3080 Ti is a bad value so the 3080 12Gb is not so good a deal. Understand these are trying times to get a GPU and the big companies know they don't need to sell 3080s
  • 3070Ti is a great deal when in stock.

TLDR: get the one that's in stock but you pretty much only need the 3070 Ti. Unless it's a 3060 and lower or a 3080 12Gb and higher, it's a decent deal imo

Specs:

  • 5950X -30 all core curve, +200 Mhz offset
  • H150i 360mm AIO
  • Asus X570 Dark Hero
  • 4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL14
  • Asus Strix OC 3080 Ti
  • EVGA 1600G+
  • 13xAL120 V2 Uni fans

I have the FTW3 Ultra 3080 ti. I got from EVGA.

The card is a beast. It uses 400 watts stock and the is very hard to cool. None of the cases I had could get it to game lower than 80c so I had to buy a new case for it.

The difference between it and a budget 3080 ti is about the same as going from a 3080 to a budget 3080 ti or about 10 frames.

Is it worth a $1700 for gaming? It depends.

Mine has no problem beating my MSI Gaming X Trio 3090 that cost $2,250 or my MSI 3080 ti that cost $1,750.

It basically only competes with the ASUS Stix OC, MSI Suprim and AORUS Extreme.

If you have a Ryzen 5000 series or Intel 10 gen 8 core and up then yes. If you have less with no plans to upgrade get the 3070 ti.

If those are your only choices, and you game at 1080p the 3070 Ti is overkill already tbh unless you game at 240hz+ or something... I would save your money. But if you have to, take the 3070 Ti.
