Is 16TB Seagate Exos not compitible with my MSI MAG X570 motherboard?

I just recently bought a seagate hardrive and tried putting into my build but i dont see it on windows or in the bios.

I heard the disk turn on when i tried yesterday but it was not detected.

So a friend told me to check this website https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-X570-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support#support-main-block-qvl

and i dont see the seagate 16TB listed. So my friend told me its not compatible.

 

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Most huge NAS drives like that aren't supported by consumer motherboards AFAIK. Check to make sure it's enabled in BIOS though

Make sure your SATA cable isn't in a port that is disabled by an M.2 (if there is any).

Drives are drives. "Motherboard support" for them isn't a thing. Either they talk the protocol or not. I've had 10 and 14TB drives on my desktop without issue.

 

Some older (read pre-UEFI) boards may not be able to boot from >2TB drives, but those days are pretty long gone.

Did you look in the disk management system to create a partition?

 

From looking at the storage QVL it has the ironwolf pro 18TB. so can't see why the exos 16TB would not work as it's not a size limit.

These lists contains the devices the manufacturer has officially confirmed to work. Any device not on the list hasn't been tested, but that doesn't tell you whether it is supported or not. If just means the chance of it working as expected is greater if it is part of the list.

The motherboard specs typically contain information like "SATA x disabled when M2_2 is used" or similar, though I don't see anything like this here.

 

It wouldn't hurt to try a different SATA port and/or cable however.

Short answer: check the manual

 

Longer answer: well, that isn't applicable here (I checked the manual)

 

Try swapping out SATA cables and ports, just for good measure. Make sure the SATA port is enabled in BIOS (some have the option to disable individual ports).

its a very big drive and its in a consumer motherboard i would think there will be somthing in the bios if not i think your going to have to downgrade to an 8tb or less soz man this sucks

douple check that the drive does not pop up in the partition. I once tought my HDD was dead, but i had to SCROLL down to see the drive

Also, check the drive power is properly connected, and/or try another power connector.

BTW, the reason no SATA ports are disabled when using m.2 drives is because AFAIK that's only a problem when M.2 SATA is used... whereas these m.2 slots are pcie only.

It's an issue if some of the SATA ports are routed from the CPU, as opposed to all coming from the chipset (which is the case with OP's board). My B350 has two ports disabled if I use any M.2 drive (which after checking the manual, is only documented on the webpage; the manual claims only SATA, but I know they're disabled now with my NVMe drive; not confusing at all).

Ahh yeah, forgot about those boards. I think it's only because they are hybrid slots though which accept BOTH pcie and sata. slots that are only pcie NVME don't need to disable any. I always check for notes on the m.2 on the spec page with mobos if I'll be using any SATA drives.
