5900x - Crosshair Hero VIII - 128GB RAM @3200MHz to 3600MHz

zeros

Hi All,

I had the chance to get 3600MHz RAM at an amazing deal but so far have been able to boot the PC only once while at 3600MHz. If I set it to 3200MHz it works without an issue.

Does someone know what I should look at to set it and keep it at 3600? Speed is/was never necessary but if it's already there then I don't mind fiddling with it to get it.

3600MHz quad sticks with effectively 4 ranks is a lot to ask of from the memory controller. My guess is the memory controller just isn't able to keep up. If you pull out 2 sticks of memory, it should boot up just fine at those speeds, but 4 sticks is just pushing it too far with that chip and that board.

Can you DOCP to 3600MT/s in the BIOS..?  It may be - in addition to what @RONOTHAN##said - that the RAM may not be 100% QVL for that 'board... it can happen.

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Correct 2x works  at 3600MHz no problem. Hmm, can it be that I need to do some OC to the CPU and other settings?

Yes I can, that's how it booted up once, accidentally turned PC off while putting the sidepanel back and when I tried starting it I was back to "60" error code and no post.

QVL? I found 2 links regarding this term and got a quick understanding of it, will check tomorrow more in depth what this means for me and if I was lucky or not to be in the list.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

The IMC in AMD CPUs struggle with the amount of ranks of memory they control, so single rank is the easiest, dual rank is a little more difficult, dual single rank is about the same, and dual dual rank they really struggle with. If you wanna go into BIOS and increase voltage and play with subtimings to get it to try and boot 3600MHz, that's basically your only option if you care enough about 3600MHz. It doesn't help that ASUS's memory topology isn't great with 4 sticks, so if you were on a different motherboard you might have a slightly easier time, but with your current setup 128GB 3600MHz doesn't seem like it will work without a lot of tweaking.

Personally, unless you really have a need for 128GB of RAM, I'd leave 2 sticks out and stick to 64GB. It will be faster, more stable, and easier on everything.

What's the brand and model of the RAM?

Is it a quad kit or two dual kits?

What motherboard?

When you go 4x dual rank memory sticks for Zen3, you need to boost the voltage up a bit. My kit is different to yours, but it is a 16x4GB 3200 CL14, and to run it at 3600, I need to push it with more VDIMM (1.46V), more vSOC (1.1V) and relaxed one of the main timings. DOCP with its 1.35V setting had no chance in booting at 3600.

I would question if the RAM you got an amazing "deal" on is really what it claims to be. Otherwise 3200MHz isn't slow memory and taking a very minor speed hit rather than cutting half of your capacity seems to be the better idea and certainly is more futureproof as applications are more likely to benefit from having enough memory to draw from instead of just the fastest.

I just checked, it's not there but looking QVL's across all boards this set doesn't show up. If I'm lucky it's just because they were not tested... 🙂

I'll go with the above trial and error, and yes I'll keep all 128GB.

Thanks, I'll have a look at these now, the only issue is if I don't set it right I have to take one RAM out to boot again then change settings, restart then turn off then install and test again.. sounds like fun... xD

I'll keep both, no worries both were brand new in sealed boxes 😉. Both work at 3600 if only 1kit at a time. Seems to be a motherboard+size+speed combination issue. I'll try to OC, give it more V's and see if any results. Otherwise as you say I'll keep the size instead of speed, using it for other applications too where size is more important. I just want to get the speed as it's probably possible so why not :).

One BIOS update, couple changes here and there and seems to be working now. Now hoping it continues to do so 🎉

  • 2 years later...

I updated the BIOS again for another issue and ran into this same problem again, forgetting what I did last time.

Now I know what I changed.. works in manual and DOCP (XMP) mode too, just set to 3600Mhz and  raise DRAM voltage from 1.35V to 1.36V (or by 0.05V increments).

If anyone else is looking for this issue and a fix for it.
