Computer making weird noise

Go to solution Solved by Bitter,

Sure sounds like a fan with a bad bearing, sounds specifically like a dry bearing. Slim possibility that it's something rubbing on the fan hub or blades. Get it to make the noise constant then unplug the fans one by one or if it's safe to do so stop them with your finger. If the noise stops with a specific fan then that's the bad one. Possible that the bad fan is inside the PSU but you can't unplug that one and I don't condone sticking things in there to try to stop the fan. Don't forget to check GPU fans too!

I don’t know what this noise is (attached in video below), it first started this morning and has returned periodically through the day My first thought was the hdd so I checked my 2 and 1/2 year old WD Blue 3tb hdd’s with Crystal disk info and the program said my computer is fine. Then I checked my fans, and no cables were stuck in the blades. And finally dusted my pc. I really don’t know what this noise is so I’m turning to my last option the internet. Thoughts?

Sounds like a fan bearing. I think if your HDD was making a noise that loud it'd have already crapped out. That noise means there's vibration and if it were the HDD those vibrations would undoubtedly cause a head crash. Since you say SMART detects no errors then try figuring out which fan is causing it.

Maybe you could run some fan control software, maybe even through bios, and play with individual fan speeds to see if you can isolate one of them?.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

i mean it could be the fans, but its hard to tell it could be harddrive,  you should hear my seagate barracuda on a "good" day, noise in the op is nothing against it!

Or i may present to you

IDE XT Harddrive ; )

ps: the funny thing is OP's video first sounds like a fan, at the end it sounds more like harddrive to me, so it's really hard to say, need a bit better recording perhaps

It's a different story when the HDD is making loud and regular noises. Not preferable, but not fatal to the drive. The sound here is akin to what you get when you hit the brakes on a rusty disc brake; circular travel being interrupted at irregular intervals. You can tell because of the way the noise seems to rapidly fade in and out. If a HDD bearing was doing that the drive would 100% be dead. If it was something like a head seek motor that'd probably be reported by CrystalDiskInfo because that much friction would make it difficult for the drive to select a track. Just my thoughts though.

yeah, you're right it seems too irregular for a harddrive,  still at the end it sounds like my seagate kinda, which irritates me...

i agree though,  op should check each fan more thoroughly, or even the pump if there is one.

Fun way to check for a failing hard drive which hasn't yet failed SMART is by running UserBenchmark then checking its 4k random speed relative to other similar drives. Even if all the other stats of the drive are fine the first thing to go will be 4k random. This is because a drive with failing hardware will likely struggle to find its track position and so 4k random will suffer most. If your drive does not show bad 4k random then it's just a HDD being loud... Because HDD.

Well you really need to find out what is making the noise. All we can do is make wild guesses.

Stick your head in the case and try to see where it is coming from. Or start unplugging things until you narrow it down.

The last time my HDD made sound something like it, i assumed it was screaming "Retire Me or Kill me" repeatedly. 😅

thats precisely what my seagate does, and my toshiba for that matter! but i made a thread about it and was assured this is "totally normal"... and low and behold both drives still work, seemingly completely normally,  except sometimes, completely randomly they'll sound like a construction site or machine gun lol 😆

(ps: i use both as external backup drives, which makes the noise even louder, but thankfully less frequently too...!)
