Looking for new speakers

DominicNikon

Hello,

I am looking for suggestions for some speaker and subwoofer combo for desktop use that has a large subwoofer since a lot of stuff I play has a lot of bass for a reasonable price.

Thank you in advance

I'm just going to assume your budget is around $120-$150 for the sake of this. To be frank, you don't have a lot of options at this pricepoint. Either you can get a mediocre system that does absolutely nothing well, or you can get some decent speakers without a sub. The klipsch promedia system isn't terrible, but the sub isn't exactly going to shake your bones, and overall it just isn't super impressive imo, but as a desktop system it works. Don't consider the logitech at all.

If you want something that sounds decent and you want a sub that's actually capable of producing room-shaking bass (although for other than bass output it isn't a great product):

More "budget" speaker

Amazon.com: Edifier R1700BT

better performance, more features.

Sub. But yeah, quite a bit overbudget. Just isn't ideal.

I'm new to speakers and stuff but since that's a stand alone subwoofer, what speakers would you hook up to it? Because increasing budget would probably be a good idea

I listed everything above. Look above the link to the sub. I also made some minor updates to my post.

Thank you. So the R1280Ts plus the r-12sw would be a much better setup for $300 and are those the only things you would need to purchase besides maybe an aux cable?

I'd probably go one of two ways:

  • Mackie CR5s
  • Mackie CR3x and a Mackie subwoofer

The Mackie 5s are on sale for $170ish, the 3s are $80ish. The subwoofer is like $160. If you're trying to shake the walls, a subwoofer is your option. If you just want to hear the lows, the 5" monitors do a pretty nice job. They'll have vastly better sound than the Logitech stuff. There's lots of powered speaker choices out there though. If you watch eBay, you can score some killer deals (I got my CR5BTs forrrr....I think it was $60).

I second focusing on a good pair of active speakers (and possibly a powered sub later if you want) rather than a 2.1 satellite system.

They just sound much better as a hifi experience.

e.g Heres the Logitech Z623 (what youre looking at) vs Microlab Solo 7's (the speakers im currently using).

They dont quite hit as much bass, but overall the sound is far more enjoyable because of the mid drivers and the highs are less bright with the larger tweeter.

Oop, forgot. So there's several options out there, if your computer has a subwoofer output you can just use that and drop down to the r1280t without the subwofoer line out (which should be $100), or some other speaker. But yes, essentially.

Looks right to me. Different speakers and subs will bring about different levels of performance. The klipsch sub Iinked above will play the deepest and give you the most output in it's pricerange if you're looking for that. If you want something with a little more... finesse, there are better options there. The edifier offers some features and a sound that mackie's lineup does not, but the mackie lineup will be more neutral.

Correct, and yes it does.

The Klipsch mentioned is nice, but it's....huge in comparison. Kind of like if you were looking for a new SUV, you said you like to go off roading occasionally on the weekends, and being suggested Gravedigger. For a desktop setup I'd probably aim for something in the 8" range, unless you don't mind losing a lot of under desk space.

Essentially the mackies will typically be more "true" to the original sound of the mix/recording. The edifiers may colour the sound in a sense. Can't really say which you prefer, but neutral does not necessarily mean more enjoyable.
