Just bought an ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX motherboard to go with my FX 8320. Need suggestions on CPU coolers for over clocking.

Hey peeps.

I apologise in advance, if I have created this thread in the wrong section.

I decided that I wanted to upgrade my motherboard, so I went ahead and purchased an ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX motherboard (had to make a tough decision between this or the sabre-tooth) .

My plan was always to over clock or at least try to learn how to over-clock.

I am stuck as to which direction to go with, air cooling or all in 1 liquid cooling ?

I would like to push the CPU upwards of 4.2 Ghz if its even possible.

Does any one have any recommendation?

Budget is around £100

Here is my current build:

Case: Corsair Carbide 300R windowed.

CPU: FX 8320

Mobo: ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX (replacing an Asus M5A78L-M/USB3)

GPU : Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 780Ti OC (not the GHZ edition)

PSU : Corsair CX750

RAM: Corsair vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz

Storage: 100 GB SSD, 320 GB HDD

Again thanks peep.

A great cooler that I use for my 8350 is the H100i I can push my 8350 to 4.9Ghz on it as a daily overclock and has no problem.

As someone with an FX 8320, I'd go for a Corsair H80i or if your case can store it with adequate room which I think a 300r should do, get a H100i

Both are under £100 on Amazon.

That's just my two pence

Thanks for your reply.

I was aware of the issue when it comes to clearance. I dont think its possible to fit an H100i in the 300R....but I should be able to fit a H80i.

IMHO don't OC on an Asrock board. the VRM's wont take it without breaking/whine.

NH-D14. Comes pretty close to the H100i in Linus' testing.

Or a H100i/240mm AIO and buy extra NF-F12s

why everyone recommend a 240mm cooler? the case supports a 280mm radiator, bigger is always better so get a H110 :)

H80i or h100i. Or any Noctua cooler.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

what?

Asrock is a very decent brand, if you OC on a low end board, doesn't matter from who, you will experience issues, but the Fatal1ty 990FX is at the top of the line, it's meant to OC.

Asrock can be as bad as anyone if you are talking about the low end $50 stuff only, Their extreme and pro series are very good products.

Corsair home page says it can fit 2 140mm fans in the top, so 2 120mm will easily fit

I read some great reviews on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157479, which is why I decided to opt for the asrock board.

I see some people have over-clocked an FX 6300 to 4.4 Ghz.

6300 is nothing like the 8350 when your overclocking a hyper 212 evo can get a 6300 to 4.5, and a EVO on a 8350 is 4.3 -4.4 if your lucky and thats still going to be extremely hot

You cannot fit a radiator in the 300r on the top. There isn't enough room between the top of the motherboard and the roof to fit both a rad and fans. But you can fit a 120mm rad in the rear exhaust. You may be able to fit a 240mm rad in the front, but it's likely too far of a reach for an aio. You would need a custom loop to do that.

Thanks for all your reply guys.

I decided to go for the H100i as most of you peeps recommended that.

I'll try and make a build log, if you are interested.

Cheers.

i will say this overclocking on this motherboard maybe easy but these boards do have a tendency of dieing if you over clock your processor i currently own one and i am having to replace it due to the random blue screens and i have narrowed it down to it being the board im going to go with the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130790  due to there being reported facts of the north bridge getting hot enough for the caps under it to pop so yeah its going bye bye
