Hey,

Me and some friends of mine recently had the idea of making an open-source remake of Doom 1. This project will be made for educational purposes and we will make no money, so we won't have any problems with the rights of the game.

What we want right now is:

  1. C# programmers, with basic knowledge about game development.
  2. Python Programmers
  3. Html Programmers
  4. 3d Animation Designers
  5. 2d Animation Designers
  6. A writer (Although, our game will 100% be based on the original story)
  7. Music and Sound Effects artist

If you want to join our team just send an e-mail on doom1remake@gmail.com (emails with attachments will automatically be deleted) and we will inform you as soon as possible!!!

I’m pretty sure there is already a open scourge doom.wad and the doom engine in now public domain and has been reverse engineered

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

That is not how it works. You would still be infringing on their rights and technically would still need their permission to do so, whether you sell it or not.

If you use any of their original assets (textures, models, music) you are infringing on their copyright, whether you intend to sell your version or not. Same goes for level design, and possibly other things. If there are Trademarks involved (e.g. the name "Doom") they pretty much have to defend, otherwise they risk losing it. Keep in mind you're not just dealing with Id Software, but their owner ZeniMax Media Inc. If they think you're costing them sales or possibly tarnishing their IP you'll get in trouble, free or not.

We are going to make our.own music our own logo and the name of the game is gonna be Doom Remake. Also we are going to create our own brand new animations.

Simply including Doom in the name like this could already be problematic. Just look at this: https://www.wired.com/story/doom-creator-goes-after-doomscroll/

But doom is just a word! lol

No, "Doom" used as a game's name is a registered trademark for an entire game franchise.

Dude, I know it's an english word. But it's also a registered trademark of a game franchise. I'm just trying to help you avoid a possibly costly mistake.

If Id Software/Bethesda/ZeniMax decide you're in violation of their trademark, damaging their IP, damaging their sales or trying to mooch of the popularity of their game(s) you can probably find out first hand how much "it's just a word" is going to fly with their lawyers.

Bro do you know how many fan remakes of famous games are out there?

And how many of those fan remakes use the original game's title anywhere in their name? It also depends on whether the company that created the original game is still around and interested in defending the name. Doom got an official "remake" in 2016 and a successor 2020, so that IP is still alive and kicking. There's a much bigger chance it'll be defended than some game that was abandoned 30 years ago.

Take Remnants of the Precursors for example (remake of Master of Orion). Why do you think they haven't named that "MoO Remake" or similar? (an official remake was released in 2016, so that brand is also still alive)

And you're point is? The existence of x doesn't make y any less important.

Trademarks are a funny thing, see unlike a copyright which is automatic and all covering, a trademark has to be registered, renewed and most importantly the owner has to show that the mark is still in active use otherwise they can lose the license entirely.

Do YOU know how many fan projects have been taken down by corporations to protect their IP?

The reason is simple, if a member of the public can prove to a court that the mark is abandoned or has become so synonymous that its entered everyday vernacular then a judge can award the mark be returned back into the public domain. There was legitimately a guy who tried to take Google away from, well Google. His argument was that the term googling was now so widely used to mean search the internet that Google should no longer be allowed to keep the name protected. He lost, big time but the point still stands, if they don't protect their IP they can lose it and Bethesda are still making Doom games to this day.

If a used a name like Doom Fan Remake will I face problems?

Most likely yes, you'll probably get in trouble so long as you include "Doom" anywhere in the name. Ask yourself: "Why do I want to include 'Doom' in the title?" Probably because that name is recognizable. Which means you're trying to benefit from their brand recognition.

Here's an example of someone creating a "Doom Remake 4". Didn't end well.

If you have no clue about these things ... it should be a good indicator you should STOP and think some more.

You mention C# Python and HTML all in one line ... you typically don't mix C# and Python ... you would use C# probably if you use an engine like Unity or some other engine.  If you make your own engine and everything from scratch I guess you could do it in Python  using some open source 2d/3d opengl/vulkan engine ... but C# and Python together don't mix well.

No mention of scripting or stuff like that ex Lua  ... no mention of level editors, tools to design game ... you seem to be out of your depth ... and you're looking for all the hard things while you're planning to do the most basic stuff.

If you don't have anything to contribute, why would lots of people accept to contribute their time and  energy to your project?

I find it funny that you got triggered by seeing python and C# in the same line and not by the "html programmer" part 😄

What's your problem with python though?

What's your problem with python though?

It's an interpreted language, it's slower than something natively compiled, that's an actual executable file.  You would also have to bundle python with your game/product or use something like py2exe or whatever is fashionably these days.

So you do something in C# which would force you to include the .net runtime or stick to functions that are present in old .net versions , and you artificially restrict yourself to windows xp or newer or whatever is supported by .net, then you also have to deal with the Python dependencies mess...

Stick to one thing, preferrably something that doesn't depend on runtimes.

No offense but this sounds like you had an idea for a game but you don't know how to make it and are looking for people to do it for free... if you had some proof of concept work on your github page showing that you know what you're doing and are just looking for some extra help it would be much more credible.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
