NVMe M.2 heat question.

I bought a 1tb NVMe M.2 drive to use as storage for my games. The drive mounts on the rear of my motherboard where I can’t put a heat sink on it. Will I have overheating issues because if this? Especially since I’ll be running my games from it.

you're probably fine. these go in laptops too you know and they don't have any more airflow there.

games don't have that much transfer. when people talk about stressing these they really mean constantly copying data on it for 30min to 1h. for games it's mostly the duration of the loading screen. and even the constant loading of a continuous (or just very big) world/map you're talking about less than a second of transfer.

the only stress would be when you're downloading the game but i don't think your internet is 2000MB/s so you're not going to be doing anything harmful to this drive

No.  Heatsinks for M.2 drives are mostly hype for anyone with any airflow in their case.

The Thermaltake Tower 100 that I’m using isn’t known for having very good airflow.

Right, he doesn't need airflow ON the drive.  Just any airflow in the case.  So heat doesn't build up, then cause that area to get hot.  

 

If air flows the heat out...  🙂

 

Even if he had no fans in the case, itx or mini super small itx, he'd be fine.  They just don't get hot for 99.9999% of users.

 

Better?

 

Nutshell:  It's almost as ridiculous to worry about drive temps as it is to think NVMe is actually 5-10x faster than SATA 🙂

I’m sorry it was ridiculous to you. I asked the question because I honestly DIDNT know. I like to protect my investments because I’m not made of money. That’s all.
