How do I connect work laptop to monitor? What cable?

AppleUK

Hello, I have recently purchased a 4K, 144HZ monitor Gigabyte M28U, I have the only display port cable to connect the monitor to my gaming PC and it works fine.

However, I also have a work laptop ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 (https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/thinkpad/x-series/ThinkPad-X13-Intel-/p/20T2007PUK)

Since there is only one display port on the monitor I do not want to have to keep changing the cables, so I would like to use the USB C port on the work laptop to connect to the USB C port on the monitor.

The specifications of the laptop show that is able to output 4K @60hz but I do not know what cable I need https://inquirecontent2.ingrammicro.com/Manufacturer-Brochure/1065699499.pdf

Is this cable sufficient to run 4K 60hz please? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thunderbolt-Transfer-Compatible-Alienware-Chromebook/dp/B08GLCQBYD/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Many thanks 👍

You can always get an adapter cable. I'm assuming you'd need USB C to Display port?

Hi @SirWendall thank you for your reply. I do not want to use the display port on the monitor as it is already connected to my gaming PC.

I would ideally like to connect my work laptop via USB C to the USB C port on the monitor.

I can't use HDMI as it only supports 4K 24hz

I just need to know if that cable is sufficient

Theoretically you should just need a USB-C to USB-C cable. The display just lists USB-C as an input type but isn't specific about it being USB-C DP-Alt mode. The Laptop has a Thunderbolt port so 99% of the time that'll also do USB-C DP-Alt mode.

Thank toy Rickeo for your reply.

I believe the monitor does support USB C DP Alt mode https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/nra1er/just_received_my_gigabyte_m28u_turns_out_it/

I'm just a bit confused as to what USB C to USB C cable I should get

Theres this 40Gbps cable

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thunderbolt-Transfer-Compatible-Alienware-Chromebook/dp/B08GLCQBYD/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

And then there's this 5Gbps cable but I was under the impression that I need more bandwidth than 5Gbps to display 4K 60hz

Either should work. You likely don't technically need the Thunderbolt rated cable as the connection to that display isn't Thunderbolt but if It was me, i'd buy the higher rated cable regardless.

That should be fine, it lists display as being OK so everything is wired. The spec you see for data doesn't relate to Alt modes.

The spec sheet for the M28U says it comes with a USB cable in the box. Isn't it USB-C on both ends? Using the stuff included by the manufacturer is always a safe bet
