1080p240/280Hz or 1440p144/165Hz

Rob_dog

So I am planning a new build, and I was in confusion about the monitor. These are the three monitors I was planning to use and what my use case will be.

Uses: FPS Gaming, Minecraft Java Edition, Streaming, Rendering Premiere Files for Other People

Asus Tuf Gaming VG259QM (25" 1920x1080, 240Hz/280Hz OC, IPS, $289)

MSI Optix MAG251RX (25" 1920x1080, 240Hz, IPS, $339)

Asus Tuf Gaming VG27AQ (27" 2560x1440, 144Hz/165Hz OC, IPS, $329-$349)

How competitive of a gamer are you? If you're somewhat to very competitive, the 280Hz monitor is your best bet. If you're not, the higher resolution really is nice, and the refresh rate is still high enough to be good for competitive play.

I am semi-competitive (and by that I mean my cousins call me sweaty af lmao). So higher resolution or higher refresh rate?

If you desire to get better, then the higher refresh rate definitely. Otherwise, either one would be more than fine. The higher refresh rate might have the slight lead, but a coin flip might be your best bet.

It seems like the choice is what you want/value most:

  • cost
  • size
  • resolution
  • refresh rate
  • features (design, stand, ports, OSD, etc)

As long as your computer is capable of running at 1440p, all three choices will work for the simple use cases that you've listed.

I'd personally go for a good 1440p monitor at 27". Even if you're somewhat competitive, 144Hz-class should be enough. Going over 144Hz will give a slight advantage again, but with very big diminishing returns. The Gigabyte M27Q should be a good option, if you can save up some more the MSI MAG274QRF-QD or LG 27GP83A-B are as good as it gets for these types of monitor.

But if you really have to stay in-budget or want 240Hz, then the MSI MAG251RX you already mentioned is a good choice.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
