So yeah... Was wondering... Okay I guess we can only hope patches fix this later on since it's the software issue (age4 itself)

theres evidence in the ddr4 vs ddr5 tests, ddr5 is 30% faster in aoe4, but only for games like aoe4 hitman and some ubisoft titles, it's quite rare for now

RTX 3080 Ti only 5% gpu usage in age of empires 4.

The games still manage to go up to 130 fps but then sometimes goes down to 50 fps

I am with a 10900k and 1440p monitor. All settings to high.

What am I missing ? My gpu usage went up to 14% maximum but mostly stay at 5%.

I should not have less than 100 fps in this game what am I missing ?

All other games run perfectly like they should.

Anyone knows ??? This is annoying as hell

I have to say if I play a 1 vs 1 then I will get 100-130 fps

Then if I play a 4 vs 4 late game I am down to 50 fps but GPU usage still at 5-10% ???

CPU usage stays steady around 20-30%

Help !! Why won't the GPU use ressources to keep a 140 fps steady ????

I have the latest NVIDIA drivers so you guys know...

what are u using to monitor gpu usage, also check power draw on hwinfo

MSI afterburner

I am starting to think that the issue is age 4 itself, found many threads on google that they get 130 fps with very very low gpu usage and then gets to low as 50 60 in some fights etc..

Seems like just modern game problems where they are optimized like SHI T !!! right !?!?

theres no way it's pumping out 130fps while ACTUALLY having 5% usage, thats why looking directly at power draw might be better.

Checking again.

Here is print screen below. Does core load = gpu usage ??? If yes that would mean gpu usage was 78% at that spot. So then in the game I was in a spot where I had 120 fps there. So since CPU usage is around 20% usage I assume that the game is unable to use all the GPU to get up to my gsync 144hz monitor 144 fps ?

(all settings are fine vsync etc.. gsync etc... works fine lock to 144 in all games... in age 4 settings it's fine too so not a problem here )

it also says ur gpu is drawing 328w, so looks right.

The dips might be an aoe specific thing, aoe has alot of calculations going on.

some can be driver issues and what drivers do you have?
Also AoE4 is kinda different and weirder performance compared to older AoE titles, more players, most likely more units and terrain manipulation (game has a small amount of that) to AI for all the units and their paths. Then you have the network code for PvP.

Then the game might just perform worse than expected, but it does seem like they had some performance issues around the launch so patches could come and new drivers for it.

Youre working under the assumption that the usage % metric is showing the correct value.

If the usage % metric said 1000% usage you wouldnt assume the gpu has become 10 times more powerful.  You would know that the% metric was obviously just incorrect.

  • 2 weeks later...

um sorry, but it seems like there is some problems with Age of Empires 4, due to the engine it runs on.

It is single core focused title, not multi core like most newer titles and trying to use more advanced features that is not good for single core use.

So you need a very fast single core CPU to utilize more of the game.

Wouldn't think this would be a problem in newer titles, but it's microsofts or relic's Essence engine.

No wonder it doesn't look that great either or perform that well or can have issues that other game engines would not have.

Which makes sense why you say there is better performance with less players, more players and units would demand more CPU, and if single core usage... it's not going to go well and very depending on the CPU you use. (runs the E-core system from intel and it only runs on those cores) 😛 Although I do wonder how it would handle the E-cores on windows 11 or it just wont make it.

While there is something wrong when showing 5% when it clearly is more than that for 100+ fps. could be just that the overlay is bugged with.

Also that by nov 15 update (destroying save files) and fixes

Quote

"Changes made to drastically reduce performance drops when panning the camera across the map."

Which could vary a lot due to the limitations, from 100 to 60 fps when moving the camera around... even when staring at basicly nothing.

Also due to the single core usage, any background apps could impact that single core, which is being used to whatever fps impact that could create.

Then there is also the performance between running the game in fullscreen or not.
