Which CPU to get

Hello,

first up sorry of this is the wrong categorie but seemed fitting here:

I have a RTX 3090 on the way since I got it relativley "cheap" (considering market conditions anyway).
I am currently running a 8700k but that CPU actually isn't mine and I need to get a new one.
I also already have a z490 strix motherboard which was a leftover from a build I did for someone else.

So the options I am considering so far:
1 10850k + use the z490 board -> 408€

2 11700k+ use the z490 board -> 360€

3 11900k+ use the z490 board -> 505€

4 5900x + new board -> 720€

5 5800x + new board -> 580€

when gaming I will mainly use it for 1440p 144hz gaming on my desk and 4k 60hz on my tv.
Also for VR (biggest reason I wanted the new gpu).
I also do quite a bit of solidworks work but don't think either should make a big difference there

I am kind of leaning towards waiting and getting one of the cheaper options. It just seems to me that a lot is happening in the cpu space right ow with amd and intel both moving to new sockets, ddr 5 and pcie 5 arriving.
question is though if it will be wise to even upgrade to ryzen 6000/alderlake or rather waiting for 7000/wateverlake since I am not sure if there will be problems in the beginning (espacially with alderlakes big little design, which sounds great but I bet will cause all kind of problems in the beginning).

Lastly: yes I know I have a completly oversized gpu and it is kind of funny to know ask buget questions for the cpu, but I got it at msrp and just pulled the trigger mainly since I assumed that it will propably help with VR supersampling a lot. I don't mind if the cpu is bottlenecking the gpu theoretically in some 1080p benchmark basically I want to play games in 1440p 144hz nicely, same at 4k 60hz and mostlyy the question is if it will hinder me in VR for now.

11900k is just garbage, dont bother

Go for the 10850k though if you dont care about overclocking or undervolting then maybe look for a cheap 10900(f)

unless you need a pc tommorow, wait 2 weeks and get a 12900kf and a z690 motherboard, and some ddr5. will be way better than any upgrade for your intel platform and about the same for amd

Out of the choices you listed, I would personally choose the 11700K. A few caveats though. One is that I am more of a AMD person, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt. Another is, do you need them to be the K versions of the processors? Do you have choices for the non K versions (such as the KF, just no letters at the end if you don't want to overclock) in your area or online such as eBay? I totally get you have a nice board that is designed for overclocking and understand wanting to get a K version, but since you already have a 3090, maybe consider a KF CPU instead if they are cheaper (which they generally are).

I found a 10700K on eBay that likely ships to your country. It is what I would personally go for on a budget if I wanted to wait for the upcoming generation or 2 stuff that comes out (I am also planning to skip a generation of the DDR5 RAM so that bugs can get ironed out first). I would go for a KF, but it was just as much as the K, so there you go:

I'd wait for the 12000 series benchmarks. We're less than 2 weeks away now and the 12600K might turn out to be a great value.

However, out of those listed, the 10850K is probably the best option. It's the fastest Intel CPU currently available and since you already have a board and RAM, it'll probably be the cheap high end option.

How is it possible to have a motherboard as a leftover? Kinda curious how that happened.

I personally wouldn't go with 12th gen especially since that will probably cost you more than anything you listed so far.

Since you already have a z490 board I would go with the 10850K, which is very much identical in terms of performance to a 10900K.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-10850k/

The 10900K (10850K) beats 11th gen in the majority of benchmarks i have seen so far, even gaming, so the 10850k is the better option.

Ryzen 5000 would be marginally better at those resolutions but that very small difference doesn't justify paying for a new board imo.

In short: 10850K is your best option.

Sometimes you find yourself with extra parts. Once I never got a motherboard delivered, it was recorded as "lost in transit" by the shipper, I got a replacement, then the original showed up a week later. Contacted the retailer, they said just keep it.

I also got stuck with a B550 motherboard from a Newegg combo. Ended up giving that one away to a friend.

As for 12th gen...one thing that's been weighing on me is how there don't seem to be many out of the box LGA 1700 compatible coolers. That's a big disadvantage at present.

Of what you have listed I would go 10850k and call it a day. 10 core 20 thread should last you a long time before you need to upgrade again.

Intel 12th gen isn't cheap, you'll need at the least a new motherboard so +$200 at least plus early adopter issues if they have any.

No cpu mobo or ram atm

2tb wd black gen 4 nvme

2tb seagate hdd

Corsair rm750x

Be quiet 500dx

Gigabyte m34wq 3440x1440

Xbox series x

  • 3 weeks later...

Thank you to everyone who replied.
I decided to wait a few weeks and hope to get either of the listed CPUs for cheap with black friday, or maybe cleaning out inventory for alder lake.

thank you again for your feedback!

  • 1 month later...

And just in case someone is still interested  I got a 11700k a little before christmas for 350€. Happy with it for now 🙂

about how I ended up with the board: I was building a few systems before, bought a motherboard too much and only realized my mistake once I already missed the return window. Funny sidenote: when I got the CPU I built a custom loop including the 3090 and two radiators. When I wanted to turn everything on it turned out the board was dead. So turned out I could have ignored the board completely 😄
