Covering half of GPU pins to make it an x8 slot card?

Real_Smoky

Hi!

A friend of mine damaged the very last pin on the GPU during an installation. Testing has shown that it no longer works in an ordinary x16 slot, but it DOES work in an open-ended x8 slot.

I was wondering if it would be possible to cover up half of the pins with electrical tape to essentially turn it into an x8 slot card and then put in an x16 slot. Normally, x4 or x8 cards do work in x16 slots. This would essentially convert an x16 card into an x8 card.

Are there any dangers of it? Could the electrical tape somehow catch on fire or something like that?

Thanks!

electric tape would probably be too thick to fit in an x16 slot, maybe use nail polish to cover up the unwanted contacts instead

It’s safe but I think electrical tape might be a bit too thick. Potentially kapton tape would be a better option?

Kapton tape is good.

check the BIOS and see if you can force the slot to x8 mode?
