Using the Android Phone after no security updates

Suryakod

How long can we use an Android Phone after the security patch updates have stopped?
For example, if we have an Android phone running Android 10 and the security updates have stopped in April 2021. Is it still safe to use it as a daily driver without holding back?

How long can we still use it?

Is it still safe to use it for money and banking related apps?

As long as you don't go around installing apk's from random sites pretty much till the phone breaks or becomes unusably slow.

Banking and all that is safe as long as again you aren't going on and doing sketchy stuff with the phone.

Honestly most people don't even think about this and still happily use their ancient phones. Banking apps know this so they make damn sure to be as locked down as possible.

Friend still uses his one plus one on cyanogen mod 6.0 and it's totally fine.

Umm, what makes you think that hacking is imminent?

The previous reply suggests that One plus one is still fine.

He's joking.  Note the "everyone has gone bankrupt that didn't buy an iPhone or Pixel". 🙂

You'll be fine.  Just take standard care with your apps and logins.

Its not safe to use. You will 100% get hacked. This is evidenced by all the reports of it happening on your daily news TV channel and articles plastered all over the internet.

This is why everyone who did not buy iPhones and Pixels have already gone bankrupt.

this is not true at all

Do you have other options?  Are you just being cheap, or is this your only phone option?

It's fine for banking, and other things, but security updates and updates in general benefit your phone for a host of things.

You may download a new app that has an issue or malicious code that you're not being protected against because your security updates are old and don't cover newer apps.  That's on the very outside chance but you're asking about issue and that is one that CAN happen, not that it will.

Run a malware program possibly to help with protection?

2FA helps as well.

Basically you'll be fine, but it's a matter of why you're using the phone IMO.

as long as you dont do anything stupid on your phone you are fine i for example still use a tablet whith android 7 on it and have i been hacked/got a virus? no! it is fine nobody is going to hack you unless you fall for ransomware/viruses you just arent importantb enough for a hacker to be worth the effort and speccifically target you. if you are some bilion dollar companue ok but as an end user? no

Will your phone be a prime target right away? No. And it's true that diligent security practices (don't click on strange links or download from strange sources) will go a long way toward keeping you protected, whether or not your phone is getting updates.

But, despite what some are saying here, please don't assume you'll be fine indefinitely. Serious vulnerabilities are a practical reality, and you don't want to be left permanently vulnerable to those attacks. And no, being an everyday person is not a defense mechanism — botnets and other fast-spreading malware will happily compromise a "regular" person's phone.

If it were me, I'd give a phone about a year-ish after its last security update before updating. There won't be too many big exploits during that interval, and it'll give you time to decide just when and how you upgrade. And if you value keeping a phone for a long time, be sure to get a device with a relatively lengthy security update schedule. Apple is the gold standard for this in the industry (phones six years old are still getting feature/security fixes), but in the Android realm there's now the Pixel 6 (five years) and newer Samsung phones (four years).

you are my kind of person if it aint broken dont fix it i guess hell if it works for you use it till it breaks! i am currently posting this on a android nougat tablet with the latest security update from 4 years ago so the verdict is basically if you know what you are doing you can use it until it breaks or becomes unbearably slow while doing the things you do!
