1080p @ 60 vs 2k @ 30

caleb1

Newbie question.

Would anyone know if 2k video at 30 fps would use the same storage space as 1080P at 60 fps?  Or more

That would make sense to me, double resolution but half the frames.....

Thanks

You can make either take the space you want as that's determined by the bitrate you choose.

It's not only the bitrate itself to consider it's also the codec as well. A camera that uses Motion JPEG for example can have a much higher filesize than equivalent quality h.264 for example.

It IS only the bitrate that defines the size. Now yes depending on codec to get the same visual quality the required bitrate, and hence filesize will be different.

Don't believe I suggested otherwise, just a thing to consider since some cameras offer multiple codec options.

Thanks for the responses everyone.  Good to know about bitrates, differences in cameras, etc.

But assuming nothing is changed except for the resolution and FPS, should both aforementioned options consume the same space?

Thanks.

Assuming the camera itself does not change bitrates in the background, yes. You will use half the data (theoretically, probably not exactly) using 30 over 60.

As long as the bitrate is identical they'll take the same space.

Some people use "2K" to mean 1440p for some reason...

My camera shows the resolution option as "2k" but I believe it means 1440p (2.5k/2.6k)

What camera?

Most cameras list the bitrte for different settings. The bitrate is what determines the filesize, not the resolution or fame rates. For exmple some cameras do 4k30 at 50mbit and some cameras record the same res and frame raate at 1200mbit, a 24x range

Its an SJ Cam SJ6 Legend. It does not list bitrate in the resolution selection menu, but I can probably find it in the manual.

2K @ 30fps 2560*1440.
should be 2.5 or 2.6k not 2k

Why not test the bitrte your self? You can  record in both settings, and find the bitrate in a player like vlc.e
