Ethernet connection goes poof for no reason

It gets fixed when I run the troubleshooter for it. I searched for the "default gateway not available" thing but didn't really find any solutions. What's causing this? Started happening after I got a new router and motherboard. Do I need to mess around on the router or is it something on windows?

Could be Windows, the networking cable or the router.

First step, power cycle router and then reboot or do ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew.    Does that help?

You can also try below from an Administrative command problem

  • Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter.
  • Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter.
  • Type ipconfig /release and press Enter.
  • Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.

Done. Will have to wait and see if it happens again

The default gateway is your router. So this indicates a connection/communication issue between your PC and the router.

Are you using DHCP or static IP? You could try setting a static IP in Windows and setting the default gateway to the IP of your router (which is probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 or something like that)

Static IP is typically more stable in my experience with Windows and will make things easier if you use network drives, file & printer sharing, remote adminstration tools (from within your LAN), etc. Because, unlike with DHCP where your PC's IP could change, you won't have to lookup your system's internal LAN IP in the case that it changes, because it shouldn't change when manually set with a static IP.

Also, when using a static IP, you might want to enable "NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in your network settings for the adapter in Windows (I think it's under the WINS tab iirc).

Of course, all this assumes a wired IPv4 configuration. Might be similar but slightly different if you're using IPv6.

Static IP might not make as much sense on mobile devices that use WiFi and travel around a lot to different networks, because you'd have to manually fiddle with the IP settings of the device everytime you switched networks.

I had a very similar issue years ago and it turned out the Internet Security software that installs software to scan everything that downloads had become corrupt for some reason.

I did a full uninstall of my Internet Security Package including using the removal tool available from Avast at the time and then i did a full reinstall with the latest version of the software.

Yeah it's on DHCP, 192.168.1.1 normally, dunno why it decides it doesn't like it for no reason.
