So, I've just built my first computer, and I would like to overclock my CPU, to get a little more performance. As I have never done this before, I wanted to get some advice and tips.

CPU: AMD FX 8320 (3.5GHz)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master 212 EVO

Motherboard: MSI 760GMA-P34

Firstly, can my CPU cooler handle it? What sort of clock speeds would you recommend (I was hoping for 4GHz at least)? How should I go about doing it (I was planning on using AMD Overdrive instead of going into the bios)? What temperatures are safe (I've had it up to 60 degrees celcius before)

As much advice as possible please, I really don't want to mess it up.

not on that board. its got no vrm heatsink and its matx, i surprised it can run that cpu at stock tbh

I didn't wanna put a video link on "How-To" because your motherboard may be different in layout and design than others from a single video.

So here is a big list of various video's on Overclocking a similar CPU (8350) in various boards/bios's.

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=how+to+overclock+8350&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&gfe_rd=cr&ei=exdEU7_-LsbC8gels4HQDw#q=how+to+overclock+8350&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&safe=off&tbm=vid

You should always look up your CPU as well, finding out voltages and everything possible so you do not guess at ANYTHING.

If you have to guess on something, google it/youtube it, or ask here.

In saying that, cheap boards can overclock, but can fail a lot sooner, possibly taking out other components. This is why the above poster warns you to not bother...

I'm inclined to say the same without a good motherboard or vrm cooling options... (bar throwing more fans in the case for airflow)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

you wont have any issues with the cooler ,it 'll perform great, the mobo , i don't know ,might not handle it ,i say wait till you get a motherboard that's overclocking optimized ,or ,don't go too far with this one

Id get some beefy heatsinks first for your VRM. The 212 is more than capable

Board not really suitable. See if you can just bump multi don't even touch voltage.

its not just the heat from the vrm that matters, its how clean the power is when it comes out of them. a cheap board with few low quality vrm's will have much much more ripple than even a mid range board like the ud3.

@Jumper118 what does ripple current coming out of the VRMs affect when OC'ing? Stability or max OC? I've seen some videos on Maxxarcade's channel on youtube, on some very-budget gaming build where he used some crappy 1155 boards on some sandy bridge Pentiums, and still got some great OCs out of them for what they are. I mean, I get that heat is bad for the VRMs, but the CPUs, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have capacitors on the bottom of them, the little tan things on the flipside of the die, for the sheer purpose of filtering out noise in the current going to the CPU? Mind you I'm a total N00B when it comes to overclocking, I've only done one build where OC'ing was done, and that was(and still is) a quick and dirty OC, with the voltage is set to "auto" because I didn't want to have to spend 7 hours screwing around with BIOS settings, and have yet to have any stability problems, I am just trying to gain knowledge from someone who knows more than I do. Thanks in advance.

Ripple affects both stability and max oc. It can also kill yout cpu. Ocing an intel pentium is very different to ocing a 8 core amd, its 125w when its stock which is double the pentium and uses a much higher voltage and current. The power phases are very important for ironing out any ripple and on old, cheap matx boards they will be lower quality and there will be fewer of them to keep cost down, the problem with this is that it will have more ripple at lower voltage, have more internal resistance, which will make it get hot and inefficient, so that you need to use even more voltage to get a higher oc. Also 1155 is a much newer platform and so the boards will use better components as well as pc parts progress a lot over a short space of time.

I think I learned more in the 30 seconds that it took me to read that post than in my whole time working at the shop I work at. Props to you good sir. :)

thanks. i like to think that i know a fair bit about overclocking, but usually i'm not good at explaining things in words.
