My Brother Touched his Motherboard while it was on and everything turned off

My little brother was installing a new graphics card when one of the screws fell in. He tried to grab it but the pc was on and he touched the motherboard and it turned off. It wont turn back on. We can’t figure out what to do. Help!

You were changing GPUs in a computer while the computer was on, dropped a screw and shorted something?

my little brother was screwing in the gpu to his new build (it was already in the pcle slot and powered by the PSU before he turned on the pc). he dropped a screw in the case, was trying to grab it and the pc turned off (probably because he touched the motherboard while it was on).

that's why you turn the whole thing off and unplug from power before servicing...

 

Try unplugging it, turning off the PSU, holding the power button for a few seconds, then plug it back in and see if it can turn on.

it doesnt. I know though, I should have cuationed my brother better about what to do.

Him touching the motherboard isn't an issue. It's the metal screw that causes shorts. Clear CMOS and see if it'll come back on.

Then take this as a learning experience. Don't be mad at your brother, just make sure he understands what he did wrong and what he should do next time.

 

You might be able to pursue an RMA for the board, but since it was damaged due to user negligence rather than due to some fault by the manufacturer, it would be unethical to do so, and it may get denied.

Yeah, I’m not angry at him, more angry at myself for not being responsible enough to watch him and help him handle delicate equipment like this. I’m not sure if I should pursue an RMA or not, I don’t think it would be honest.
