Hey Guys!

Wanted to see if I could get some opinions on any future upgrades, if any.  I think I should be good for awhile, but I wanted to see what you all think.  I was probably thinking a new MoBO, but I could be wrong…

Here’s what I have:

Motherboard: MSI x470 Gaming Plus

RAM: XPG DDR4 3200 mghz (16gb)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800x

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH U12S Air Cooler

GPU: RTX 3080 FE

Storage: SSHD Seagate 1 TB

Storage: Samsung Evo 970 SSD

Case: Be Quiet 500DX

Let me know what you guys think.

I play a mixture of both single player and multiplayer games.

Whether you will need to upgrade to a major or minor extent depends on your use case. Though honestly for most people that machine will probably be good for quite a long time. (though it may be worth going to 32GB of RAM in the near future, or more storage) In the future if you plan to deal with multithreaded workloads and want more cores, you could just toss a 5950x or 3950x in. Otherwise you will likely want to wait for the next generation of CPUs and MOBOs to launch as AMD prepares to launch their platform with DDR5 and a new socket some time in the next year or so, and the new generation(s) of GPUs that will eventually compel you to acquire a new system.

In search of the future, new tech, and exploring the universe! All under the cover of anonymity!

Swap the HDD for a 2.5" SSD, or just add a 2.5" SSD. Reformat, make the 2.5" SSD your game drive. You can alternatively just move the game installs to the 2.5" SSD, or just uninstall and re-download them there. Have part of your steam library on the HDD, like indie games where game boot & load times might not matter much. Idk how satisfied you are with the HDD though, if you want to keep it installed or keep it as a backup, in a box.

Only thing that might be worthwhile upgrading is the cpu to a 5800x

Tbh just wait for the newer platforms if you wanna upgrade, and if the cpu starts to become a bottleneck you can always just overclock it

Oh. You're alright then on the psu. Maybe just add more SSD storage.

You can always double your RAM too. If you do that, I would recommend either getting the exact same kit of RAM that you have (use up all 4 RAM slots)... or just buy a kit of 32GB RAM, and replace what you currently have.

More SSD.  If you need it.

More RAM.  If you need it.

Better GPU.  If you need it.

Bigger monitor. If you need it.

Get the drift?  No idea why your first impulse is to upgrade a motherboard, literally makes no sense.  It's like upgrading the chassis on a car.   What would you possibly hope to gain?

So really, you need to figure out your uses and needs and go from there.  Since you don't tell us what you use the PC for, we can't tell you what you may benefit from.

I think you're current build is fine for 1-2 more years at least (probably even longer if 1080p). Maybe more if you don't plan to play latest AAA games.

Did you miss the RTX3080 he's got?  He's good for 5 years with AAA at 1440p.  If he's playing at 1080p....even more.

Currently playing at 1440p lol, but in GPU I figured I would be fine for quite some time.  It's just something I wanted to ask since I'm new to the PC world.  I was actually thinking of upgrading RAM because I checked and saw that my max speed for my RAM is at 1500 mghz...not sure if that's good or still ok, but figured I would ask.

So for the RAM, I thought I had DDR4 3200 mghz, but as an update my RAM is actually XPG DDR4 1500 mghz cause I checked CPUZ for that

So CPUZ will give you the Hz number, but the advertised Number is actually double the frequency. It is called double data rate (DDR) because on every cycle two data transfers will be sent. Thats why some people call it mega transfer rate, but 3200 MHz should be effective Hz count.

If you double the reading from CPUZ, then you only end up with 3000MHz. Maybe you can enable another XMP profile in the Bios, that will saturate your ram more with 3200MHz CL16 (the first clockspeed below, called CAS Latency). But if your current Ram is only 3000MHz, then an upgrade to 3600MHz 32GB Ram could be benefitial... I'm not certain tho, it may only bring you 5 fps+ max...

Gotcha.  Well I feel stupid now.  That makes sense though.  Sadly, I checked my MOBo’s specs and it can support up to 3400 mghz of DDR4 I believe.  Either way, I guess I’m good on RAM for a bit.
