How do I extract music from a musical clock?

When the clock plays music every hour, the computer should "tap" into the MCU's speaker output and enter as a line in at the laptop. How do I do so?

Is there anything that I can connect to the clock's speaker to the line in of a PC? A teardown reveals a speaker, a sound generating PCB. clockwork, and the spinning ring. The clock is a Seiko one.

Just keeping this here as a OK, what you can do is clip jumper wires on one end to the board where the speaker is soldered to it and the other end of those cables to a 3.5 cable plugged into a mic jack where indicated. Clip the - to the top and put the + over either of the two bottom ones.

Edit: just a warning, that signal from the musical clock is most likely amplified for the tiny speakers clocks use so if the clock has a volume wheel keep it low.

I've done quite a similiar mod to an old Yamaha toy keyboard. However, since there were PCB schematics and documentations of previous attempts available online, I could rather easily identify the points before the amplification circuit i had to solder to. It should be possible to use the amplified output though (other people have done so on the aforementioned keyboard).

And schematics are always helpful when doing something like this, so try to find them. Though, don't be too helpful as it is just a clock.

You can get a stereo extension cable, cut one of the jacks and then connect the wires to the speaker. 

Plug the other end in Line In jack on your pc and record.

Ideally, youwould be to try to read the data from the chip, but it's more difficult and sometimes nearly impossible. the chip may be one of those music card chips which have a one time programmable memory or some factory written eeprom and the chip has no way to read the data through the IO pins. One could use acids to strip the epoxy and get the die and then use a strong microscope to take a picture of the memory area and then convert that to 1 and 0 bits... usually it's a very noticeable pattern.

While chiming, the speaker wires measured 2.1 mV at minimum volume.

Since my clock's speaker is dying I'm trying to replace the clock's chime function with software on my PC that plays the recorded files hourly. Or connecting the clock to a soundbar's AUX input.

So instead of spending maybe 5-10$ on a classic alarm clock, you're gonna waste tens of watts keeping your PC turned on, just to play a song at a certain time?

Smart move.

 

IF you want to keep it diy, get yourself an Arduino kit with a piezo speaker and a time / calendar chip and write a sketch that makes an annoying sound in the piezo at your wake up time

Not an alarm clock. It's a clock that plays chimes/music hourly like a Rhythm clock. Even if I replace the clock function with software, the PC won't be on while I'm not working.

That should also be doable with an arduino. If you're attached to the chimes themselves though, the output mod might still be worth it.
