are there any drawbacks with pcie expansion boards?

What are you going to use it for?

Those things were pretty expensive

And it isn't Magic, if the host card only have 16x lane then the daughter board can only supply Theoretical speed of 1x16x,  2x8x, and so on

I see it with drive or usb expansion like you said or heck, even a capture card for that matter, but you better place the gpu at you main system, unless you have different use case for this gpu, let me know

Also the example you shown is, if iirc, an old pcie 2.0 expansion board if you Serious about it take a look at one stop system, they have a gen3&4 pcie expansion products

I have a mitx system because I wanted something small at all cost

then I relized that I do need some extra pcie slots

Mini itx will have one or two nvme slot,

Trust me the expansion card stupidly expensive, and you better build anew pc with a lot of expansion right out of the box, just see the price

This little 3 slot expansion is still pretty expensive

There are other options for pcie expansion boards. You just have to make sure that your motherboard supports pcie bifurcation. Otherwise the computer won't know that you want two slots and will be vary confused. I wouldn't split a pcie x16 slot into more than two x8 slots if you want to use a gpu. The board I would use would be one of these. https://c-payne.com/

Worst case you just take the current setup, get a matx board and dump it in a small matx case. Cheaper than those expansion boards. Also where are you even going to fit that in a case?

I would personally go for an Matx board in a small case as well. Everything is just that much easier and you'll save yourself money and headaches. As a general rule, smaller=less expandable. USB cards multigpu setups and capture cards all take up more space than you think they would.

Only thing that sucks is there are like 5 actual really small matx cases the size of a regular itx one and of those 5 2 are discontinued for now.

I don't usually need that many pcies

I just realized that to do something I need some extra pcies

then the other way around is to get another cheap system to do the job

I can't make up my mind:

should I make a build of

13.4 x 10.8 x 3.4 inches

or

11.3 x 6.7 x 6.3 inches?

I mean I can see them, but dunno if the difference in volume is really that noticable
