Which Macbook Air?

Hi all,

I am looking into buying a Macbook Air for on the road editing (and for couch surfing 🙂 )

It will be used on the road for some light photo editing and importing using Lightroom Classic and Photo Mechanic. (42MP pictures)

Most of the editing (and all the really heavy/multi layer etc editing) will however be done on my main desktop at home.

Other than that, the basic stuff: browsing, youtube, word,...

If it wasn't for Lightroom I would just get the cheapest base model.

However, considering Lightroom I am doubting between the base model and the base model with 16GB of ram.

From what I read, the 8 core GPU really isn't much beneficial above the 7 core (for my use case anyway), but the ram difference is still unclear for me.

What do you guys recommend? Get the upgraded version or just stick with the base model and save myself €230?

Thanks for your help!

Gijs

If you're dealing with high resolution images, you're going to want 16GB model, you can't change it later. 8GB is really only viable for basic web browsing use. Spending an extra $230 now is worth it.

I recommend that you convince yourself that you'll be educating yourself with your new Macbook and order it with the education discount and only pay €80 for the RAM upgrade AND get a free set of AirPods.

...they don't make you prove that you're in college.

You're telling me... They wanted $800 for the 64GB upgrade on my model. I couldn't justify it. Still ended up paying $400 for 32GB though, lol.

At least here in NA they don’t make you verify anything if you pay on their website.

They even sling it in the store for people on the fence about a big purchase. It’s like the worst kept secret about buying Macs here.

It might be different in your country though, I don’t know.

Definitely spring for 16GB of RAM. You'll still be working with large files, and there's also the possibility your needs will grow over time.  Hopefully 256GB of storage is enough, but if you can't justify the 512GB option now you can always add an external drive later.

Ignore the 8 Core GPU thing.

First thing you want to upgrade from the Base model is Ram to 16gb.

Second thing is SSD to 512gb (if you do that, THEN you can think about getting the 8-core GPU Modell, since the price difference is quite small.

Ok, That's a huge rip-off. Apple didn't become the first trillion dollar company by being nice to their coustomers.

Thanks all!

Will go for the 16gb base model. 256gb should be no issue as I use external SSDs

Found a friend who is still in college, will use his discount :)
